Departmental Overview
The Office for Protection of Human Subjects (OPHS) is the administrative office that supports the Committee for Protection of Human Subjects by coordinating the review of research, keeping abreast of the changing policies, rules and regulations, and working with CPHS and researchers to address research protocol and compliance issues. OPHS also provides education outreach to UC Berkeley investigators and functions as a liaison to other campus units such as the Sponsored Projects Office and the Office of Environment Health & Safety.
The purpose of the UC Berkeley Stem Cell Research Oversight (SCRO) Committee and associated SCRO Office is to ensure that human stem cell research undertaken at the University is performed according to the highest ethical and scientific standards, in conformance with the campus Human Stem Cell Research Policy and all applicable regulations and guidelines.

Responsibilities
Has a supervisory role of lower level research compliance analyst staff, as delegated by the Director. Provides leadership for operations, everyday guidance, consultation, supervision, training for new staff and continuing education for all unit staff.
Serves as technical/analytical expert/advisor to Director, faculty, national and systemwide committees and professional organizations. Drafts responses and/or comments on behalf of campus on proposed federal or state regulations. Serves as Primary Alternate for Director on compliance committees and represents the Director at other events as delegated. Coordinates executive meeting agendas.
Advises faculty who are planning and implementing large, multi-faceted, multiinstitutional, international or otherwise complicated research projects; advises on all research compliance issues; and/or coordinates with other campus compliance units or outside organizations, et cetera. Conducts protocol review as needed and may triage incoming compliance protocols.
Drafts/proposes new campus-wide policies & procedures and guidelines for department based on analysis of issues facing campus oversight committees, institution and national groups.
Develops specialized training for departments and individuals, including training of researchers, compliance committee members and other administrative units. May conduct post-approval monitoring (PAM) activities.
As delegated by Director, assumes leadership and responsibility of special projects or initiatives to improve, enhance, streamline and facilitate research compliance at this institution.
Assists Director in filing reports as required by federal agencies; has an active role in preparation and participation for compliance and site visits. Interacts with federal government for review, audits, recordkeeping and adherence to published regulations. Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research design, scientific research concepts, and terminology.
Demonstrates self-discipline and independent judgment completing highly complex, broadly defined assignments.
Expert knowledge and ability to apply all of the Federal, state, system and university regulations, policies and federal guidance documents.
Advanced proficiency in public speaking, writing, and website maintenance.
Ability to resolve conflicts in a timely basis.
Ability to interact with faculty, verbally and in writing, with professionalism and decorum.
Ability to lead and mentor others.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Minimum of at least eight (8) years of progressive responsibility in a research compliance unit and/or equivalent demonstrated progressive expertise and training.
CIP must be maintained.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $112,400-$158,640.
This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for full UC benefits.
Other Information
This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H-1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.
This position is eligible for up to 100% remote work within the United States. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs and are subject to change.
