Required Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities
related to public health, health promotion, health education, or a related field are
encouraged to apply – a degree is not required if the candidate meets the required years of
experience specified in the job description.
- 1 year of experience implementing educational programming, workshops, or outreach
campaigns related to student health.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:- Master’s degree in health promotion, health education, public health, or a related field.
- Familiarity with student health topics, (e.g., stress management, sleep hygiene, nutrition,
sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, hazing prevention).
- Certification as a Health Education Specialist (CHES) and/or in Mental Health First Aid.
- 2 years of experience working with or supporting college students (through employment,
internships, peer education, or campus involvement).
Position duties:
Health Education, Promotion, and Program Delivery
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to increase the health and well-being of the community, utilizing the best national practice guidelines, evidence-based research, and the 8 dimensions of wellness model
- Deliver health and wellness programs, workshops, and educational campaigns appropriate to student population
- Develop and cultivate a comprehensive directory of community partners and resources that address students’ needs, including clear guidance on how to access and navigate community resources
- Develop educational materials and presentations covering a broad range of health topics, such as nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, and substance abuse and hazing prevention
Evaluation and research
- Conduct assessment of student and campus needs, initially to inform decisions regarding scope of services, and participating in national surveys as appropriate
- Use needs assessment and relevant research to assess student outcomes, inform on-going programming decisions, and allocate resources
- Evaluate educational programming, including outreach efforts, workshops, and trainings, including AOD and hazing prevention and education
- Remain informed about current public health initiatives and research, especially as related to student health and wellbeing
- Lead compliance efforts related to Drug Free Schools & Campuses Act and state/national hazing legislation, including chairing the DFSCA Task Force and monitoring campus initiatives
Advocacy
- Provides oversight of a Student Health Advisory Group
- Inform institution of public health and wellness practices, policies, and equity issues
- Conduct individual health coaching appointments and educational sessions as well as small group discussions with students centered around the 8 dimensions of well-being
- Work with various university departments, student organizations, and community agencies to create a supportive, comprehensive wellness environment
- Provide consultation and training to professional staff within the campus community on health and well-being issues
- Develop, grow and sustain a certified peer health education program
Communication
- Work closely with Media & Public Relations staff to develop and execute a communication plan for population level prevention messaging and outreach opportunities via social media and other avenues
- Communicate and utilize data from campus, national, and state level surveys to inform the campus community, partners and programs
- Advocate for policies and programs that support student health and wellbeing
Physical and Environmental Demands:
While performing duties of this position, the Health Educator is required to talk and communicate sufficiently to exchange accurate information, move about the office and around campus to various indoor and outdoor locations, and remain in a stationary position either at a desk or in meetings for extended periods. Visual demands include the ability to prepare and analyze data and figures, accounting, transcription, use of a computer terminal, and extensive reading. Must occasionally lift, push, and/or move up to 10 lbs.
