Responsibilities


Serve as the Benefits Manager for Florida State University, the incumbent will be a member of the Human Resources management team responsible for the management, direction, and coordination of benefits. The position is responsible for the administration of university benefits for State-administered and FSU-specific plans, including research, development, and execution of plans; plan communication; employee enrollment and termination; and vendor coordination.

Specific duties include:

  • Maintaining compliance with federal and state laws in the administration of university benefits programs.
  • Providing insightful input and strategic participation with management in developing competitive benefits programs for all classifications of employees and consulting on benefits-related issues.
  • Conducting and developing programs to educate and orient employees on aspects of employee benefits.
  • Representing FSU in Benefits related meetings, committees, or programs. Participate with internal and external audiences with planning recommendations for benefits and insurance.
  • Supervising staff: leading, directing, and evaluating staff in the management of benefits programs; training staff to ensure proper administration of plans, and providing professional development to staff in all areas of benefits administration.

Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree and four years of professional experience in human resources or benefits administration, or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of the same professional experience are required. (Note: higher education may substitute for experience at an equivalent rate.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the direct supervision or management of employees.
  • Experience in a Higher Education setting.
  • Experience with the principles, practices, and standards of benefits administration, including experience with insurance, retirement, and other benefits programs.
  • Understanding of the administration of benefit programs compliant with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Applicable knowledge of the principles of human resources management and an understanding of functional areas within human resources.
  • Experience with web-based applications and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) or comparable software.
  • Experience with vendor management and service agreements.
  • Experience with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

The ideal candidate for this position is a benefits leader and problem-solver who is action-oriented but calm under pressure. The successful incumbent will see the big picture, operate strategically, and understand the small details that impact business operations, while providing excellent customer service and ensuring discretion with sensitive information.

During the first 60-90 days, time will be spent getting up to speed on FSU benefits — our policies, plans, and procedures, engaging Benefits and other key HR staff, and learning about vendor relationships and employee benefits products. This management position requires competency in Benefits administration and delivery.
