Microsoft 365 Security Engineer – Job Profile

Role Overview

A Microsoft 365 Security Engineer is responsible for planning, implementing, managing, and monitoring security and compliance solutions for Microsoft 365. The role focuses on identity protection, information protection, threat protection, and data governance within the M365 ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configure and manage security tools in Microsoft 365 Defender (Defender for Endpoint, Identity, Office 365, Cloud Apps)
  • Implement Microsoft Purview Information Protection (labels, DLP, insider risk, data classification)
  • Monitor and respond to threat alerts and incidents using:
  • Microsoft 365 Defender
  • Sentinel (SIEM)
  • Design and enforce Conditional Access policies
  • Configure Azure AD Identity Protection (MFA, SSPR, risk-based policies)
  • Govern and audit M365 usage via Microsoft Purview compliance center
  • Collaborate with IT and Security teams to improve the security posture
  • Manage Secure Score and other M365 benchmarks
  • Conduct regular security reviews and gap assessments

  • Azure AD (Entra ID)
  • Microsoft Sentinel
  • Intune (Endpoint Manager)
  • Defender for Cloud Apps (MCAS)
  • Exchange Online Protection (EOP) and Defender for Office 365

Certifications (Highly Valued)

  • ✅ SC-200: Microsoft Security Operations Analyst
  • ✅ SC-300: Identity and Access Administrator
  • ✅ SC-400: Information Protection Administrator
  • ✅ MS-500: Security Administrator Associate (being retired, but still relevant)
  • Optional: AZ-500, SC-900 (foundational)

Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity principles
  • Deep understanding of Microsoft 365 security architecture
  • Familiarity with PowerShell for automation and reporting
  • Experience with incident response and SIEM/SOAR
  • Understanding of Zero Trust model
  • Analytical thinking for threat hunting and compliance mapping

Typical Background

  • 4-6+ years in security, cloud, or IT infrastructure roles
  • Experience working in regulated industries (healthcare, finance, etc.)
  • Prior roles: IT Security Analyst, System Administrator, Cloud Security Engineer
