This position is eligible for telework, which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Manager, the position is accountable for the safe and efficient operation of a 24/7 warehouse operation by providing oversight and support. Responsibilities include distribution, logistics, facility management, employee relations, and the safeguarding of inventory and stock investments. Will oversee a team of Unionized workers that supports this function.

Responsibilities:

  • Front-line supervision of all warehousing and logistics activities in assigned facilities (to include multiple locations) to control receipt, maintenance, and distribution inventory and 24/7, 365-day-year operation of facilities in support of operating departments in compliance with standard operating procedures. Direct and monitor work assignments for the workforce under his/her jurisdiction.
  • Manage equipment errors and issues utilized at the various locations, including the Warehouse Management System Swisslog ASRS (automated storage and retrieval system), vertical lift machines, bar code scanners and printers, and other pieces used in Metro-North’s warehouses.
  • Administer equipment/vehicle preventative maintenance and repair plans to maximize the life of the Department’s material handling/fleet equipment investment and ensure the safety of operators. Administer facility maintenance and repair plans to ensure a safe work environment and adequate maintenance and repair.
  • Collaborate with management on safety, training, and development programs. Monitor compliance with safe work practices and ensure a safe work environment.
  • Manage staffing plans, workforce availability, and budget control, ensuring that defined best management practices in compliance with the TCU Agreement are followed. Ensure compliance with provisions of the TCU Agreement. Assist in the selection, career development, and motivation of personnel within the department. Provide prompt and effective coaching and counseling. Assist in the discipline/termination of employees when necessary. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential.
  • Collaborate with management in the development of standard operating policies and procedures. Participate in process reviews to identify operating efficiencies. Monitor adherence to standards and controls. Implement processes/directives towards the achievement of operational objectives. Monitor compliance with processes/directives towards the progress of achievement of operational objectives and goals.
  • Monitor use of operating budgets.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Material Management and Warehousing methods and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, administrative, problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in high-pressure situations; must be extremely flexible and be able to adapt to change.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and union personnel.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite and/or comparable applications.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft or comparable inventory control system.
  • Strong knowledge of safe work practices as they relate to a warehouse environment.

Required Education and Experience:
  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Associate’s Degree (AA) in business, transportation, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education from an accredited college and experience, may be considered in lieu of a degree. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education, and/or technical credentials, to include two (2) additional years of related experience, may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in material management and/or warehousing.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience being a team lead or working as a supervisor managing a diverse workforce.
  • A driver's license is required.
The Following is/are preferred:
  • Knowledge of applicable collective bargaining agreements. Preferred
  • Knowledge of computerized material management, warehousing, or inventory environment systems, including RF barcode technology, and/or Railroad maintenance management operations.


Other Information

May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends)

Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.
