Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Chief of Operations and Health/Safety to oversee fire rescue operations, emergency response activities, and departmental health and safety programs.

This leadership role is responsible for managing daily operational readiness, coordinating emergency response efforts, and ensuring compliance with occupational health, safety, and risk management standards. The position oversees personnel, training initiatives, incident command support, and safety protocols to protect both responders and the community. The Assistant Chief will also develop and enforce policies related to workplace safety, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance. Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain a security clearance and maintain it as required. Clearance level is to be determined. Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in fire service, including supervisory or command-level experience
  • Experience managing fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), and incident command operations
  • Experience developing and implementing health, safety, and risk management programs
  • Experience supervising personnel, including training, scheduling, and performance management
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, fire codes, and life safety regulations
  • Experience investigating incidents, accidents, and near-misses and implementing corrective actions
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills

Experience Preferences

  • Experience in a municipal or county fire department leadership role
  • Experience overseeing operational divisions, training programs, or safety compliance initiatives
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes and ISO ratings
  • Experience coordinating with emergency management agencies and regulatory bodies

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to respond to emergency incidents and perform command-level duties in the field
  • Ability to work in high-stress and emergency situations
  • Ability to conduct field inspections and safety evaluations

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Occupational Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field

Education Preferences

  • Master’s degree in Fire Science, Occupational Safety, Public Administration, or a related field
