The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Mediterranean archaeology, with expertise in Greek and/or Roman archaeology, Egyptology, or related fields, to begin August 16, 2026.
UF is located in Gainesville, a city of approximately 150,000 residents in North-Central Florida, 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and 67 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, and within a 2-hour drive to large metropolitan areas (Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville). We seek a dynamic scholar whose teaching addresses the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world, with a primary focus on Greek and/or Roman archaeology. Preference will be given to candidates whose work demonstrates strong engagement with digital archaeological methods, including (but not limited to) 3D modeling, spatial analysis, GIS, remote sensing, digital epigraphy, or data-driven approaches to archaeological interpretation. The ideal candidate will also have an active involvement in ongoing excavations and ability to provide students with fieldwork opportunities abroad, supporting UF’s and the College’s focus on experiential learning.
A secondary interest or emerging practice in AI-enhanced research (e.g., machine learning for artifact analysis, predictive modeling, AI-supported pattern recognition, or natural language processing for archaeological corpora) will be considered an asset.
