General Function
The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.

Description of Primary Duties
The MSU Libraries seek a Student Success Librarian, a dynamic, collaborative, and student-centered faculty librarian, to join our team. This 12-month, tenure-track position plays a pivotal role in advancing the academic success, engagement, and retention of students through research and information literacy instruction, with particular emphasis on first-year students, transfer students, international students, and first-generation college students. The Student Success Librarian will join a collegial team of library faculty committed to: teaching, collaboration, and responsive library services in support of the university’s mission. This position offers opportunities for professional growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, and leadership in emerging areas of academic librarianship such as AI literacy and open education. A portion of this position’s time may be spent teaching courses in the Library’s Library Science program.
  • Develop, teach, and help assess information literacy instruction with a focus on lower-level undergraduate courses and core curriculum integration.
  • Provide research assistance and individualized academic support to students across disciplines.
  • Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and campus partners including First-Year Programs to design programs and initiatives that enhance student learning, engagement, and transition to university life.
  • Partner with others in the Research & Instructional Services (RIS) unit to integrate AI literacy and critical thinking about information technologies into instruction and outreach.
  • Support Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives through advocacy, faculty consultation, and collaboration on affordable learning strategies.
  • Serve as a liaison librarian to designated academic departments, contributing to collection development, outreach, and curriculum support.
  • Actively promote library resources and services to the campus community.
  • Contribute to library and university committees and engage in scholarly and professional activities consistent with faculty expectations.
  • Teach for-credit library science courses as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook.

Additional Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program (or international equivalent
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
