The Assistant Stage Manager supports the planning and execution of technical, logistical, and stage management operations for most orchestra services. This role demands professionalism, technical proficiency, and the ability to collaborate effectively under time-sensitive conditions. Under the super vision of the Operations & Stage Manager, the Assistant Stage Manager works closely with union crews, guest artists, musicians, and venue staff to ensure efficient and safe delivery of all production elements. While prior experience in stage management or live performance production is preferred, we are willing to train the right candidate who demonstrates strong organizational skills, professionalism, and a collaborative mindset.
The Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra presents a Regular Season spanning approximately 15 weeks from September through June, followed by a Summer Season of 4 weeks during July and August.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with setup, strike, and management of concert production.
- Coordinate equipment and instrument needs for rehearsals and performances, including loans, rentals, and special requests; occasionally transport light equipment to and from venues as needed.
- Ensure backstage areas are safe, organized, and compliant with venue policies, union regulations, and fire code standards.
- Maintain orchestra equipment, oversee its transport, and take inventory each concert, ensuring proper storage and handling.
- Support artist logistics including dressing room setup, hospitality, and technical requirements.
- Remain on headset during performances to manage live cues and troubleshoot issues in real time.
- Assist in developing production documentation including crew schedules, stage plots, signage, and backstage lists as needed.
- Communicate effectively with IATSE crews, venue personnel, and orchestra staff.
Qualifications and Requirements
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in stage management practices and concert production workflows
- Familiarity with orchestral setups, risers, shells, and backstage operations
- Basic knowledge of audio, lighting, and video systems
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to travel between venues and transport equipment as needed
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and transport equipment up to 50 lbs

- 1–3 years in live performance production or orchestral / theatrical stage management
