Assistant System Administrator/System Administrator/Senior System Administrator
Assistant System Administrator
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, four [4] years of directly related full time experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling four [4] full-time years may be considered. (Student experience may be considered.) Two (2) years of full-time directly related programming or systems-administration experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Beginner level of experience with the following: Linux system-administration, scripting/application development skills, OpenStack, Ansible/Terraform, container technologies, GPU/AI software stacks, and research-computing workflows. Additional years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Assistant System Administrator will automate departmental infrastructure, support private-cloud and container environments, maintain faculty-developed tools, and provide technical support for instructional and research computing. Appointment level will be based on the candidate’s education and experience as outlined above.
Systems Operations and Support:
Support and maintain Linux-based systems used across research and teaching environments
Provide user support and environment configuration for AI/ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Jupyter)
Automation and Development
Maintain automation using Ansible, Terraform, and scripting (Python/Bash)
Maintain and extend custom internal web applications to support departmental workflows (JavaScript, Python, Perl)
Containerization and Resource Management
Deploy and support containerized environments (e.g., Docker, Singularity) for teaching/research workloads
Support and optimize Slurm job scheduling across GPU nodes (DGX/HGX, multi-GPU servers)
Monitoring and Collaboration
Monitor infrastructure health and usage using tools such as Zabbix, Prometheus, and Grafana
Work collaboratively with faculty, researchers, and staff to assess needs and deliver scalable, maintainable solutions
Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
System Administrator

In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, four [4] years of directly related full time experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling four [4] full-time years may be considered. Three (3) years of full-time directly related programming or systems-administration experience.

Intermediate level of experience with the following: Linux system-administration, scripting/application development skills, OpenStack, Ansible/Terraform, container technologies, GPU/AI software stacks, and research-computing workflows. Additional years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.

Infrastructure Design and Administration
Design and implement enhancements for the departmental private-cloud infrastructure.
Serve as primary administrator for major subsystems (e.g., storage, backup, virtualization cluster)
Automation and Configuration Management
Develop and maintain automation using Ansible, Terraform, and scripting (Python/Bash)
Project Leadership and Mentoring
Supervise and evaluate work-study assistants providing help-desk and development support
Architect and lead major infrastructure upgrade projects and migrations, including capacity planning and security reviews.
Collaboration and Compliance
Participate in departmental IT governance, and security reviews.
Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
Senior System Administrator
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, four [4] years of directly related full time experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling four [4] full-time years may be considered. Four (4) years of full-time progressively responsible, directly related experience that includes project-lead or supervisory duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced level of experience with the following: Linux system-administration, scripting/application development skills, OpenStack, Ansible/Terraform, container technologies, GPU/AI software stacks, and research-computing workflows. Additional years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.

Appointment level will be based on the candidate’s education and experience as outlined above.
Planning and Advising
Advise research groups on workflow optimization and cost-effective resource utilization.
Guide adoption of new technologies
Governance, Standard, and Security
Develop and enforce departmental standards for infrastructure-as-code, observability, and security compliance
Lead departmental IT policy development and risk assessment initiatives.
Operational Leadership
Serve as a Senior administrator for Linux-based systems used across research and teaching environments.
Collaboration
Liaise with campus IT and external vendors on service agreements, procurement, and budget planning
Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
Special Notes:
Assistant System Administrator: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $77,000
System Administrator: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000
Senior System Administrator: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
