About the Office

The United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Minnesota (DMN) is seeking several experienced attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Office’s Criminal Division. Criminal AUSAs in the District of Minnesota prosecute all manner of federal crimes, including violent crime and gang RICO conspiracy, financial fraud and public corruption, human trafficking offenses, child exploitation, and violent crimes in Indian Country. As a federal prosecutor, you will represent the United States of America, protect the people of Minnesota and across the country, and serve and defend the Constitution. Many have said that being an AUSA is the best job you will ever have.

This is an open continuous announcement that is intended to continually solicit applications in order to fill immediate and future vacancies. Applications will be reviewed and referred as vacancies occur and will remain active through August 13, 2026 from the date of submission. Hiring will occur on a periodic basis. These positions are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on 14-month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Job Description

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for District of Minnesota is seeking to hire AUSAs to work in our Criminal Division. Our criminal AUSAs lead cases from investigation, through charging, pretrial litigation, trial, sentencing, and appeal.

The Office’s Criminal Division is divided into four sections: the Violent & Major Crimes Section (prosecuting RICO, gang, and firearm offenses, human trafficking crimes, crimes against children, and other violent crimes); the Fraud & Public Corruption Section (prosecuting complex financial crimes, public corruption offenses, and civil rights crimes); the Narcotics & Indian Country Section (prosecuting major narcotics cases as well as crimes occurring on Minnesota’s eleven federally recognized tribal reservations); and the National Security & Cybercrime Section (prosecuting national security offenses and cyber intrusion cases). As a criminal AUSA, you will be assigned to one of these sections, but our criminal AUSAs often prosecute cases across sections. Your responsibilities as an AUSA will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.United States citizenship is required.
You must be a United States Citizen or National.

Ideal candidates will have exceptional writing skills, quick analytical abilities, strong communication skills, impeccable character and professionalism, an excellent academic record, a confident courtroom presence, the capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment, and the ability to work well with others and thrive in a team setting. Most attorneys hired have several years of experience, although highly qualified recent graduates with some experience in practice or as a judicial clerk are also considered.

Salary

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $80,609.00 to $195,100.00 which includes 27.62% locality pay.
