Assistant Vice President, Health & Wellness

The Assistant Vice President of Health and Wellness provides strategic leadership and senior management in the design, planning, development, implementation, coordination, assessment, and continuous improvement of all health programs and services within the Tulane Campus Health portfolio including the Student Health Center, Counseling Services, Campus Recreation, Wellness and Health Promotion, Clinical Equity & Inclusion, and all Public Health Initiatives including the Tulane Recovery Community. Tulane Campus Health is fully accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and serves more than 13,000 students. The AVP of Health & Wellness guides strategic planning; ensures that the mission, goals and objectives of all units are successfully accomplished; and holds responsibility for compliance with professional standards, operational requirements and regulations, and the consistent delivery of high quality care.

This position facilitates collaboration among staff from all Campus Health Services units to provide comprehensive, integrated, collaborative care to the patients and clients; promotes a strategic and holistic vision for health and wellness at the University; and supports the maintenance and sustainability of a healthy campus community. The AVP for Health & Wellness serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in the Division of Student Affairs.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: M.D., Ph.D., PsyD., Ed.D. MBA, MPHA in Public Health, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or closely-related field and seven years of related experience required.

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in a comprehensive college health setting is preferred. Knowledge of standards of either Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations or Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Care is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical, nursing, counseling, mental health, and health promotion practice and knowledgeable about developments and implementation of quality assurance programs.
  • At least seven years of experience in health care administration with progressive increases in responsibility and accountability.
  • An understanding of the culture, structure, and principles of institutions of higher education, including experience in working to achieve results across units/divisions and functions.
  • Knowledge of outpatient mental health services.
  • Extensive knowledge of organizational, financial, and supervisory practices and techniques applicable to an institution of higher education and health provider organizations.
  • Advanced knowledge of budget preparation, principles of accounting and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of ambulatory care management and procedures.
  • Extensive experience managing public health issues, especially on a university campus, including working with county health officials, university leadership, and public affairs.
  • Experience with the role of committee work and task forces to achieve university and departmental goals.
  • Experience with university emergency preparedness and management of at-risk students.
  • Experience working with university academic programs to enhance the educational experience, by providing employment opportunities, shadowing, and mentoring opportunities to students studying in the health professions.
  • Working collaboratively with the medical experts on campus regarding occupational health, epidemics and infectious disease control, workers compensation, biohazard safety, and other miscellaneous medical issues that arise to ensure appropriate communication and response for Tulane's many audiences.


Experience with developing and executing a campus model for success in Student Health & Wellness

  • Goal-oriented with clear planning to manage resources to achieve institutional benchmarks
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion and a record of behaviors evidencing expertise in advancing staff’s awareness of implicit bias and competence in working with diverse populations.
  • Extensive knowledge of current and emerging college health issues, environmental management/prevention strategies, health behavior change theories and ecological framework, and evidence-based practice, as well as ability to apply this knowledge to college-age population through assessment, program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience with telehealth clinical care and hybrid-remote work models.
  • Knowledge of best practices in human resources including compliance and talent acquisition.
  • Proficiency in community needs assessment including survey design, environmental scans, and other qualitative/quantitative methods and translating assessment results into action.
  • Comprehensive understanding of third-party payor relationships.
  • Ability to manage and improve the efficiency of mixed fee-for-service and value-based revenue structures supporting student-oriented services in the domains of primary care, urgent walk-in care, 24/7 virtual care, and population health programs.
  • Responsibility to play a significant role in Tulane's response to public health concerns, and act as a key spokesperson on current epidemiological trends based on testing regimen, wastewater labs, etc.
  • Collaborate with team of medical experts in the Tulane School of Medicine and Public Health who provide significant expertise, and to translate that expertise as a spokesperson on campus with the University leadership.
  • Knowledge of best practices in Campus Recreation and a commitment to collaboration among Campus Recreation and other closely related areas.
  • Ability to provide support and supervision to the Pharmacist-in-charge and Lab in support of compliant operations and accurate revenue predictions.
  • Oral and written communication skills that contribute to effective collaboration with students/faculty/staff. High level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner. Ability to manage projects and deliver results. Ability to work successfully with a diverse community and provide services from an unbiased and non-judgmental perspective.

  • Experience with change management and a record of evolving operations to meet the changing needs of students/constituents
  • Leadership development for an interdisciplinary team. Responsible for hiring, supervising, and training with an emphasis on customer service
