Position Summary:
We are looking for all applicants who demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds present in our community.

The Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for identifying, implementing, and supporting the use of appropriate assistive technologies and related resources to meet students accessibility needs. This role oversees the peer notetaker process and coordinates the provision of alternative format materials. In addition, the Assistive Technology Specialist collaborates with BSU Testing Services to support efficient proctoring of traditionally accommodated exams and directly manages the proctoring of exams that require non-traditional accommodations.
As a member of the Student Accessibility Services team, this position serves as a key agent in promoting equality, empowering advocates, and contributing to an accessible experience for all members of the Bridgewater State University community.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Director, Student Accessibility Services.
Supervision Exercised: May assist in the oversight and professional development of graduate assistants and student employees.

Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, with some flexibility within normal business hours. (Some evenings and weekend hours are required)
This position is located on campus in Bridgewater, MA.
(Eligible for a hybrid schedule in accordance with BSU remote work policy after 90 days)

This position is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Essential Duties:
In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to:
  • Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, disability rights & advocacy throughout the Bridgewater State University community.
  • Serve as the primary contact person for community-members with questions or need for technical assistance related to assistive technology, accommodated test proctoring, alternative format conversion, and/or peer notetaking.
  • Contribute to the creation of innovative and practical solutions to address current and emerging student needs, including those pertaining to student use of assistive technology.
  • Meet with students to evaluate assistive technology or other related needs, provide students with appropriate AT or related resources, and offer ongoing support.
  • Manage a caseload (as assigned) of students receiving support via the SAS Office, including facilitation of the interactive and ongoing process of establishing reasonable accommodations.
  • Develop and deliver active and passive assistive technology trainings and related materials to individuals and groups throughout the campus community.
  • Maintain case files and confidential student records through various databases.
  • Make informed recommendations related to the procurement of current and relevant assistive technologies and related resources to enhance student accessibility, monitoring contract terms and initiating procurement process in a timely manner.
  • Actively contribute to the development and implementation of processes and resources necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the department and the University.
  • Monitor, maintain, and manage department technology (hardware and software) inventories, including overseeing required updates, repair, and replacement as needed.
  • Obtain/create alternative format materials as needed, maintaining a library and tracking data on converted accessible documents.
  • Support the accommodated testing practices of BSU Testing Services, directly managing the proctoring of non-traditionally accommodated exams at Student Accessibility Services.
  • Oversee the functions of the Peer Notetaker request, hiring, provision, and compensation process.
  • Participate in and/or lead University based working groups, committees, events, or other activities as assigned/interested.
  • Represent Student Accessibility Services at on campus and community-based events and activities that may include admissions events, prospective students activities, cross-campus collaborative programming, SEPAC presentations, etc.,
  • Contribute to the marketing and online presence of the office via multiple platforms (print, social media, BSU-specific applications, etc.,).
  • Collect and report data regarding accommodation statistics.
  • Support the development and implementation of departmental programming.
  • Perform other professional tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in related field plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience.
  • Knowledge of and training in assistive technology
  • Experience communicating with students and interpreting disability documentation to identify barriers.
  • When monitoring exams, must be able to observe, facilitate, review, and assess the entire testing process. This may include scribing dictated responses.
  • Skilled in utilizing and maintaining complex, multi-functional databases
  • Knowledge of alternative format texts and media, with experience adapting materials
  • Familiarity with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008 as they apply to postsecondary education.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in individual and group settings.
  • Strong computer skills; ability to work with Microsoft Office products and student information systems.
  • Familiarity with case histories, psycho-educational, neuro-psychological, and medical assessments.
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity, respect for privacy and confidentiality, and a sense of ethics.
  • Experience with and an ongoing commitment to working effectively with and across diverse communities, including specific experience with one or more of the following identities/communities: People with both visible and invisible disabilities, people of color, minoritized groups and immigrant populations, people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions, first-generation students, people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree
Knowledge of and training in assistive technology, particularly technologies related to the higher education environment.
Experience with de-escalation strategies and mental health first aid.
  • Experience in analyzing case histories and interpreting psycho-educational, neuro-psychological and medical assessments.
  • Experience with Banner, Qualtrics, Clockwork, Navigate
  • Experience with Clockwork, Read & Write, Blackboard Ally, Microsoft Stream, augmented listening systems/hearing assistive technology, ZoomText, Sonocent, JamWorks, MuseScore, accessible PDFs, etc.,
