The Role

Associate - Insurance, Financial and Professional Disputes (IFPD)

The firm's market leading insurance litigation practice is expanding, and we are looking to hire an associate to assist partners with insurance, financial and professional disputes across the GCC and the broader Middle East. The role is based in Abu Dhabi and is part of our regional IFPD Department.

You will primarily work with Partner Alfred Thornton, focusing on all forms of dispute resolution. The Abu Dhabi IFPD team advises on and represents parties in multiple arbitrations (ad hoc and institutional), mediations, regional common law court disputes, and onshore court proceedings. The primary matters include construction, engineering and energy insurance coverage disputes; defending construction professionals against professional negligence claims; reinsurance disputes; and recoveries on behalf of insurers.

The partners and senior lawyers in our regional IFPD Department are largely internal promotions. We seek a candidate eager to develop a career as a dispute resolution lawyer, complementing a close knit team committed to long term growth and to the broader success of Clyde Co in Abu Dhabi.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a case load of litigation and arbitration matters, including subrogated recoveries and defence of insured professionals.
  • Provide advice to clients on dispute resolution strategy and work with colleagues in other offices to manage cross border litigation across the GCC and beyond.
  • Research, draft and prepare advice and pleadings to progress matters efficiently.
  • Work as part of a regional disputes team and support partners and legal directors with general commercial litigation where necessary.
  • Participate in IFPD department business development and marketing initiatives, including client training and drafting articles on relevant legal developments.
Candidate Requirements
  • 3-5 years PQE.
  • Common law qualified.
  • Training and disputes experience at a well regarded law firm, with at least two years in the Middle East.
  • Experience drafting pleadings, submissions and applications in arbitrations and/or court proceedings.
  • Bilingual in English and Arabic (written).
  • A genuine interest in building a long term career as an experienced litigator within the leading insurance disputes practice in the Middle East.
  • A willingness to learn both civil and common law systems and to take a proactive approach to commercial issues faced by clients in the sector we serve.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a large team of lawyers at varying experience levels.
