CUNY’s Office of Library Services (OLS) seeks a highly motivated, thoughtful, and detail-oriented individual to serve as our Digital Resources Associate Archivist on the Cultivating Archives and Institutional Memory Project, funded by the Mellon Foundation. The individual in this role will support the discoverability and use of CUNY’s archival collections online, in the classroom, and in public settings through collaboration with CUNY archivists and faculty. They will play a crucial technical role in the ongoing deployment of JSTOR across CUNY campuses and research centers. They may also digitize archival collections, as well as support and shape archival outreach efforts across the CUNY system.
The Digital Resources Associate Archivist will report directly to CUNY’s Digital Archivist and work two days/week out of the Office of Library Services’ offices at 555 W. 57th Street in Manhattan. This is a benefits-eligible, part-time position, working 20 hours per week.
Application period closes on March 6th with online interviews the week of March 9th. The expected start date for this position is March 30th, lasting through the end of August 2026, with the opportunity for reappointment through the end of February 2027.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supporting the use of JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services at CUNY campuses, including digitization and description of archival records
Updating and reviewing user documentation for JSTOR and ArchivesSpace, and other digital archive tools and workflow guidance
Creating research guides on topics found across multiple campus archives
Editing Wikipedia articles; creating Wikidata authority records for inclusion in ArchivesSpace
Preparing digital resources on behalf of the Office of Library Services, including LibGuides
Maintenance of metadata spreadsheets and files for digital projects
Occasional travel to CUNY archives for research visits
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be enrolled in CUNY Queens College’s Graduate School for Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) or have graduated from GSLIS within the past two years (Spring 2024 or more recent). Current students or recent graduates of the GSLIS Archives Certificate program preferred.
Coursework or professional experience in archives
Strong writing and organizational skills
Must be eligible to work for the CUNY Research Foundation (not already employed by the Research Foundation and able to work legally in US)
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with digital archival collections and/or digital asset management systems
Experience with creating and managing data sets in spreadsheets
Background learning new systems, providing support for users and troubleshooting systems very helpful
Experience with archival digitization and best practices of digital archival collection management
Basic understanding of DACS
Experience with JSTOR, ArchivesSpace, Academic Commons, Wikidata/Wikipedia, and LibApps helpful
Creative, team player willing to be flexible and try new things
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
Occasionally, work will require lifting and carrying boxes up to 25 pounds and working in tight spaces. Candidates with physical limitations can be accommodated and should not be discouraged from applying.
Ability to travel to CUNY’s 30+ archives across New York City, strongly preferred.
Must be available to work in-person at CUNY campuses as assigned.
Schedule and worksite(s) to be determined based on project needs and candidate availability. Generally, 7-hour in-person workdays with the Archives team in the Office of Library Services will be on Mondays and Tuesdays with 6 remaining hours of flexible remote work each week.
Pay Range:
Minimum - Maximum: $30/hour
