Job Description

Position Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and experienced associate (3-5 years of litigation experience) to join our Medical Malpractice team in Richmond. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in civil litigation (preferably with health-care or medical malpractice exposure), excel at legal research and writing, and be ready to handle a meaningful caseload. This role offers opportunity for growth, greater responsibility, and ongoing mentorship from our senior trial attorneys.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a varied docket of medical malpractice claims and related professional-liability matters from early-stage investigation through resolution (and trial when appropriate).
  • Conduct medical-records review and coordinate with medical-expert consultants to evaluate liability, causation and damages.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery responses, expert disclosures and other litigation documents.
  • Take and defend depositions of fact witnesses and experts; prepare witnesses for deposition and trial testimony.
  • Collaborate with partners, senior associates, paralegals and staff to develop case strategy, trial preparation and settlement planning.
  • Appear in court hearings, mediations, status conferences, and assist with trial work as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, health-care providers, insurers and opposing counsel, and keep internal team updated on case status, deadlines and issues.
  • Keep abreast of evolving medical-malpractice law, health-care regulatory trends, and emerging liability risks in the health-care sector.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school; admitted (or eligible for admission) to the Virginia State Bar.
  • Approximately 3-5 years of civil litigation experience (defense side preferred); experience in medical malpractice or health-care liability strongly preferred. (Candidates with fewer years and strong high-stakes litigation skills will be considered.)
  • Strong legal-writing, oral-advocacy and analytical skills—ability to break down complex medical issues into clear legal theories.
  • Experience working with medical records, experts and health-care clients is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple matters, meet deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-starter attitude, proactive in client service and eager to build deep health-care litigation experience.
  • High standards of professionalism, client focus, and ethical judgment.
