Attorney Position – Drug Court & Mental Health Court
Our firm, comprised of three experienced partners with over sixty years of combined experience in Criminal Law, is seeking a full-time attorney to join our team. Each of ou partners has served with the Sedgwick County Public Defender’s Office as well as in private practice, representing clients across the State of Kansas. Since 2015, our firm has proudly held a contract with the City of Wichita to provide representation for clients in the City of Wichita Municipal Court.
We pride ourselves on a collaborative, team-based approach to defense. Our attorneys work together daily in courtrooms, ensuring that every client receives comprehensive and compassionate representation. While our practice operates in a fast-paced environment, our supportive structure and shared expertise foster confidence and stability not stress.
Position Overview
The attorney selected for this role will represent clients in all phases of Municipal Court proceedings, including trials, plea negotiations, hearings, probation violations, and jail visits. This position carries the unique responsibility of serving on both the Drug Court Team and the Mental Health Court Team, providing critical defense perspective and advocacy in these specialized treatment oriented courts.
The successful candidate will:
Provide defense representation for clients throughout the Drug Court and Mental Health Court programs.
Offer informed, compassionate advocacy for individuals navigating substance use and mental health challenges within the justice system.
Participate in staff and team meetings, ensuring the defense perspective is well represented.
Manage a high volume caseload in a dynamic, fast moving court environment while maintaining attention to detail and strong judgment under pressure.
Collaborate closely with prosecutors, treatment providers, and court staff to achieve fair and effective outcomes for clients.
Familiarize themselves with the Best Practice Standards for Treatment Courts established by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) and apply those principles to daily practice.
Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the Kansas Bar.
Strong commitment to client advocacy and restorative approaches within the justice system.
Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
Prior experience in criminal defense, public service, or treatment courts is highly valued.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00 - $58,000.00 per year
