About our Client:
Weston Herzog LLP is a dynamic and well-respected law firm specializing in insurance defense litigation, employment litigation, and commercial real estate disputes. Our primary practice areas include:

  • Insurance Defense Litigation: Premises liability, products liability, trucking accidents, intentional torts, negligent security, and pharmacy error.
  • Employment Litigation: Defense of employers against claims of discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation.
  • Real Estate Law: Representation of property owners in commercial lease disputes, including unlawful detainer actions and collection of unpaid rent.

Job Overview:

Weston Herzog LLP is seeking a motivated Associate Attorney with 2-7 years of experience in insurance defense litigation. Trial experience is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate will have strong litigation skills, excellent legal writing abilities, and a proactive approach to case management.

Key Responsibilities:

The Associate Attorney will be responsible for handling all aspects of litigated cases. Core job duties include:

Case Management & Litigation

  • Manage all phases of litigation, including case assessment, discovery, depositions motion practice, and trial preparation.
  • Conduct thorough review of case-related records and provide written summaries.
  • Review and summarize discovery responses; prepare meet and confer letters to opposing counsel regarding inadequate responses and/or improper objections.
  • Draft, file, and serve pleadings, motions, and other legal documents in a timely manner.
  • Take depositions of plaintiffs, percipient witnesses and experts.
  • Communicate with expert witnesses, including retention, defense medical examinations and providing materials to expert for review.
  • Represent corporate defendants and their employees at deposition
  • Make court appearances and communicate case developments to clients.
  • Engage in settlement negotiations and meet-and-confer efforts with opposing counsel.
  • Prepare for and attend mediations.
  • Assist in presenting evidence and witnesses at trials, hearings, arbitrations, and mediations.

Client Communication & Reporting

  • Provide timely and appropriate legal advice to clients.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervising partners and clients regarding case developments.
  • Ensure all case files and records are accurately maintained.

Billing & Time Management

  • Perform at least 150-160 hours of billable legal services per month (approximately 35-38 hours per week).
  • Document and report all work performed on a daily basis.
  • Enter all billable time into the firm’s billing software and submit timesheets to the supervising partner daily.

Office & Collaboration Requirements

  • Work on-site at the firm’s office at least three days per week.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys and staff to ensure efficient case management and client service.
  • Complete assignments efficiently and manage caseload effectively.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Minimum of two years of civil litigation experience, preferably in insurance defense.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to handle cases independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral advocacy and negotiation skills.
  • Experience with trial preparation and courtroom appearances.
  • Knowledge of iManage document management software and/or Forms Workflow a plus.
  • Trial or binding arbitration experience is a plus.

The pay range for this role is:

130,000 - 200,000 USD per year(California)
