Sher, Cummings & Ellis, established in 1983 and located in Arlington, Virginia, is a respected law firm practicing across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Our firm focuses on personal injury, criminal defense, and civil litigation.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Associate Attorney to join our practice. The ideal candidate will have strong research, writing, and courtroom skills, with an eagerness to take on meaningful responsibility in all phases of litigation. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced attorneys in a hands-on environment and to gain direct experience handling cases from start to finish.

Responsibilities

  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, and correspondence.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
  • Attend hearings, depositions, and trials as needed.
  • Assist in case strategy, trial preparation, and client management.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed and in good standing with the Virginia Bar (Maryland and D.C. admissions a plus).
  • 2–5 years of experience in litigation, with exposure to personal injury, criminal defense, or civil litigation matters preferred.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Experience drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, and legal memoranda.
  • Confidence and professionalism in court appearances, depositions, and client interactions.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a client-focused mindset.
  • Self-motivated and organized, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small-firm environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining the firm’s standards of integrity, professionalism, and personalized client service.
