TheLibraryseeks a creative and experienced Associate Dean and Chief Librarian to direct its libraries, including its main branch: the Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library, the MusicLibraryand the College Archives and Special Collections. The Chief Librarian will lead a faculty and staff of over 40 full-time and part-time employees. TheLibrary, a hub of student and faculty research, contains over 840,000 volumes, one million plusebooks, over 59,000 ejournals, and more than 86,000 streaming videos. TheMusic Library, the largest music collection in the CUNY system, is located on two levels in the Music building.
Reporting to the Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost of Queens College for Library operations, and to the Dean of Arts & Humanities for Library personnel, the Associate Dean and Chief Librarian will provide strategic direction and vision for the library. In collaboration with the University Librarian and other CUNY library leaders, the Chief Librarian participates in the development of cooperative library services withinCUNYand beyond. The Chief Librarian serves asadvocateand spokesperson for the Queens College Library on campus, locally, statewide and nationwide. The Chief Librarian will work with college leadership to assess, develop, and integrate the new and existing technical and educational resources of theLibraryand the educational vision of the College. This will translate into leadership to meet the rapidly changing information and research needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the College.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Associate Dean administers one or more key College programs. The incumbent develops, implements, and assesses programs and services to produce high-quality results and meet strategic goals. The incumbent also coordinates activities among different units, and with areas outside the College, and may oversee staff, budget, operations, and facilities.
The Chief Librarian administers and manages the Library Department by providing strategic, operational, and financial leadership. In this role, the incumbent chairs the Library Department and the Library Personnel & Budget Committee, serving as the principal advocate for theLibrary, its faculty, professionals, and staff. Responsibilities include overseeing hiring and reappointment processes, guiding professional development, and preparing annual evaluations to support reappointment, promotion, and tenure or continuous employment. The Chief Librarian establishes strong lines of communication among Library units, provides leadership for outreach and development initiatives, and builds external relationships. As Chair, the incumbent represents the Library within the Arts & Humanities Caucus and the College Personnel & Budget Committee, while also representing Queens College Library on the CUNY Council of Chief Librarians and other College and University committees. The role requires working collaboratively and collegially with faculty and academic leadership at the College and across the University’s library system, as well as maintaining effective partnerships with local, regional, and state consortia.
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Note: This position is in CUNY’s Executive Compensation Plan (ECP). All ECP positions require a minimum of aBachelor’sdegree and eight years’ related experience. Additional minimum and preferred qualifications specific to this position are defined by the College below:
Master's in Library Science(MLS),Master's in Library Information Studies(MLIS), or in a closely related discipline, from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited institution.
SecondMaster’sdegree, or Doctoral degree.
Eight years of related experience, at least three years of which are demonstrated administrative/management experience in an academic library environment.
At least one year of demonstrated experience in personnel and budget management in a professional setting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Strong knowledge of emerging technologies and their impact on library services
A demonstrated strong record of strategic planning
Experience bringing external revenue into the library through cultivation of donors and grant fundingand capital project experience
Proficiency in a language other than English
Expert experience in providing library services to students and faculty
Established record of scholarly and creative work contributions
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to a supportive and inclusive working and learning environment

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary Range: $155,000 - $175,000
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
