Reporting to the City Council and serving at the pleasure of the City Council, the Associate Judge is a contract position appointed by a majority vote of the Pflugerville City Council. Jurisdiction of Municipal Court includes Class C misdemeanors, City ordinance violations, Class C juvenile cases and Teen Court. Conducts trials and other aspects of judicial authority by interpreting local, State and Federal laws, charter provisions, regulations and ordinances affecting the City.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Preside over Municipal Court for class C Misdemeanor cases appropriately tried in Municipal Court. Conduct trials, jury and non-jury. Conduct administrative hearings, may preside over juvenile hearings, teen court and arraignments.Review and/or sign complaints, summons, subpoenas, affidavits for search and arrest warrants, appeal bonds, affidavits, etc. Review and authorize issuance of summons, arrest warrants, dismissals, judgments, subpoenas, appeals, and other required legal documents. Review and/or deny requests for continuances. Advise defendants of their rights and Municipal Court procedures; conduct hearing and trials; magistrate individuals (adults and juveniles) brought into custody by police.Interpret laws, rulings and regulations.Assist with Teen Court and community-outreach programs. May lead these programs if the Municipal Judge is unavailable.Regular and consistent attendance for assigned work hours is essential.Works closely with Municipal Judge and the Municipal Court Administrator to establish policies and standing orders to ensure the efficient processing of citations.Use City of Pflugerville email address for correspondence with the Municipal Court. Be generally available, without a specific known conflict, to attend when Pflugerville court is in session. Court is held on the second Wednesday and Thursday of each month. The Associate Judge attends Friday show cause hearings held generally on the third Friday of each month.Other related duties as assigned by the City Council.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Knowledge of Municipal Court processes and procedures; legal terminology.Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with external public/vendors, internal management and non-management employees, and City and other government officials.Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective working relationships with prosecutors, judges, law enforcement personnel, the general public, and representatives of state, federal, and local government agencies.Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office environment.Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment.
