Associate Research Scientist - Mammo

The Department of Radiology is seeking a motivated and innovative Associate Research Scientist to join our multidisciplinary team focused on imaging biomarker development for breast cancer research. The successful candidate will work with multimodality breast imaging data, including mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced mammography, ultrasound and MRI, to advance our understanding of imaging-based biomarkers for breast cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response.

As an integral part of our team, you will work with the breast imaging team of the Division of Breast Imaging, Department of Radiology at the Columbia University Medical Center under the leadership of Dr. Katja Pinker-Domenig and collaborate with clinicians, engineers, and data scientists from the Center for Innovation in Imaging Biomarkers and Integrated Diagnostics (CIMBID under the leadership of Dr. Despina Kontos to develop and validate biomarkers that can improve patient outcomes. Your clinical expertise in multimodality breast imaging and research acumen will play a key role in bridging the gap between advanced imaging technologies and clinical application.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to research studies focused on breast imaging biomarker development using multimodality imaging data.
  • Analyze and interpret breast imaging data, integrating clinical and radiological information to extract meaningful insights for biomarker identification.
  • Collaborate with bioinformaticians and data scientists to apply artificial intelligence techniques including machine and deep learning for image analysis and predictive modeling.
  • Design and conduct clinical trials and research studies involving breast imaging modalities.
  • Author and co-author manuscripts, grants, and scientific presentations based on research findings.
  • Maintain compliance with ethical and regulatory standards for clinical research.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including radiologists, oncologists, and imaging scientists, to ensure clinical relevance of research outcomes.

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior experience in breast cancer research and understanding of breast cancer biology.
  • Experience with imaging software and tools for image.
  • Familiarity with clinical study design and processes for imaging biomarker validation.

  • MD or equivalent in Radiology
  • Experience with breast imaging modalities such as mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced mammography, ultrasound and multiparametric MRI.
  • Strong background in clinical research, with a focus on imaging biomarkers.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, including the use of statistical software and imaging analysis tools.
  • Basic knowledge of the machine learning and AI methods for medical image analysis is highly desirable.
