POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Supervisor of Specialized Transportation assists in the leadership, coordination, and oversight of specialized transportation services for the Livingston Educational Service Agency. This position is responsible for supporting the supervision of transportation staff, ensuring compliance with state pupil transportation laws and safety regulations, and promoting safe and effective transportation services for students with specialized needs.


Key responsibilities include oversight of student behavior management on buses, coordination of specialized equipment and medical transportation plans, investigation and processing of transportation incidents, and development of driver and bus assistant training programs. The Associate Supervisor works collaboratively with school administrators, nurses, parents, and transportation staff to ensure student safety and service quality.


The Associate Supervisor also supports the daily operational management of the transportation department including routing, dispatching, and field trip coordination. In the absence of the Supervisor of Specialized Transportation, the Associate Supervisor may assume operational oversight of transportation services to maintain continuity of operations.

  • Positively represents the Livingston Educational Service Agency Transportation Department in all interactions with staff, students, and the community regarding phone inquiries, staff scheduling, routing, complaints and other matters pertaining to transportation/operations.
  • Assist in coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of specialized transportation services to ensure safe and efficient student transportation.
  • Provide operational leadership and guidance to bus drivers and bus assistants regarding routing, safety procedures, and student management practices.
  • Support dispatch operations and assist in resolving route or driver issues during daily operations.
  • Review, investigate, and manage student incident reports involving transportation staff and students.
  • Work collaboratively with school administrators, transportation staff, and parents to develop and implement behavior intervention strategies for students exhibiting challenges during transportation.
  • Provide guidance to drivers and bus assistants on appropriate student management procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with transportation safety procedures, evacuation requirements, and student care plans.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with state pupil transportation laws, safety standards, and agency policies.
  • Support department safety initiatives and reinforce safe work practices among transportation staff.
  • Accurately maintains and processes attendance.
  • Answers routine phone inquiries, takes messages, routes calls.
  • Types, prepares, distributes reports, correspondence.
  • Maintains accurate files and records including, but not limited to, fleet information, accidents, and property damage.
  • Contacts parents about students and route problems as directed by the Supervisor of Specialized Transportation.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Follows up on emergency building conditions.
  • Assists in developing specifications packages and bid sheets for capital improvement projects.
  • Operates office machines.
  • Orders, processes and maintains materials and equipment (including work orders).
  • Distributes mail for the transportation/operations department.
  • Promotes safety practices for all transportation employees.
  • May occasionally be required to fulfill the role and responsibility of a bus driver, bus assistant or dispatcher.
  • Other duties as assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the general and day-to-day supervision of the transportation/operations dept. and in the absence of the Supervisor of Transportation, supervise the transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.
  • Assist in the supervision and coordination of specialized transportation staff including bus drivers, bus assistants, dispatchers and other personnel.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and operational direction to transportation personnel regarding student safety, equipment usage, and transportation procedures.
  • Monitor staff adherence to transportation policies, safety standards, and student care plans.
  • Assist in addressing employee concerns, incident follow-up, and operational issues involving transportation personnel.
  • Support the Supervisor of Specialized Transportation in implementing department policies, procedures, and safety initiatives, including planning of safety meetings and in-service trainings.
  • In the absence of the Supervisor of Specialized Transportation, assist in overseeing transportation operations to ensure continuity of service and compliance with agency and state requirements.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Required: Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in fleet operations or student transportation.

Required: Must possess or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.


Preferred:
Michigan School Business Officials Certification in Transportation, 3 years’ experience in special needs school transportation, knowledge of transportation routing systems.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before parents, staff and students.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Ability to type accurately. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Proficient in Word and Excel software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear, and continuously perform repetitive hand, arm, or finger motions (as in typing). Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is continuously interacting with the staff and the public.


Critical Requirements:
The individual must frequently meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interact with the public and other workers, and occasionally work irregular or extended hours, often under pressure from multiple demands.


Site-Based Activities:
The employee is occasionally required to inspect vehicle maintenance areas, bus yards, and bus routes, which may involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing steps, or exposure to seasonal weather conditions.


The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment.
