Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Athletics, the Athletics Assistant supports all aspects of athletic programming and activities. This role is vital to maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive environment where youth can build skills, confidence, and positive relationships. The Athletics Assistant applies trauma-informed principles by promoting consistency, modeling respectful behavior, and fostering an atmosphere of safety, empowerment, and support for all youth, staff, and families.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for all athletic programs, ensuring spaces are welcoming, predictable, and developmentally appropriate.
  • Support staff and volunteers in upholding trauma-informed program standards, including safety protocols, inclusive practices, and positive youth engagement.
  • Coordinate and assist with the setup of practices, games, and events, ensuring transitions are calm, structured, and well-communicated.
  • Provide on-site support during games and practices, responding to behavioral or logistical needs with empathy and consistency.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining organized, accessible practice and game schedules for participants and families.
  • Maintain open, respectful, and strengths-based communication with parents and families.
  • Support recruitment, training, and supervision of staff and volunteers, emphasizing positive role modeling and clear expectations.
  • Assist in organizing staff meetings and training sessions focused on youth development and trauma-informed practices.
  • Promote participation and engagement by identifying and reducing barriers to access and inclusion.
  • Support marketing and outreach efforts aligned with the Club’s mission and values.
  • Maintain accurate records of schedules, participation, and program data with attention to confidentiality.
  • Complete administrative tasks, documentation, and reporting in a timely and detail-oriented manner.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure daily cleanliness and upkeep of facilities (bathrooms, locker rooms, gym areas) to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Assist with Club supervision when needed to maintain consistency and stability.
  • Oversee concession stand operations, including scheduling, staff accountability, and accurate handling of funds.
  • Submit all collected funds to the Director of Athletics for proper processing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned with flexibility and a team-centered approach.

Off-Season & Club Support Responsibilities

  • During non-athletic seasons or program downtime, provide direct support at Club sites as needed.
  • Assist with daily Club operations, including member supervision, program facilitation, and maintaining a safe and engaging environment for youth.
  • Support Youth Development staff in delivering high-quality programming aligned with the Club’s mission and trauma-informed approach.
  • Step in to help fill staffing gaps, ensuring continuity of care, supervision, and positive youth engagement.
  • Maintain flexibility to adapt to varying schedules and site needs throughout the year.

Relationships:

Internal: Maintain open, daily communication with Club staff to align on trauma-informed practices, share concerns, and promote team cohesion. Support positive and consistent interactions with youth by modeling emotional regulation, empathy, and fairness.

External: Cultivate respectful, inclusive relationships with families, schools, and community organizations. Serve as a liaison to support family involvement and connect youth to supportive services when needed.

Skills/Knowledge Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus relevant experience in youth programs, athletics, or recreation
  • Positive, reliable, and flexible attitude; ability to serve as a strong role model for youth
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on clarity, empathy, and de-escalation
  • Working knowledge of rules for various team and individual sports
  • Ability to address and resolve conflict using calm, respectful, and restorative approaches
  • Leadership skills with the ability to direct and support seasonal staff in alignment with trauma-informed practices
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (required)
  • Valid Driver’s License (required)

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

Work occurs in both gym and office settings. The role requires:

  • Frequent movement, including walking, standing, bending, and light lifting
  • Ability to lift 30 pound basketball goal above head
  • Use of hands for equipment and paperwork
  • Clear verbal communication and hearing in active, sometimes noisy environments
  • Visual focus for scheduling, reporting, and safety monitoring
  • Occasional driving for errands
  • Ability to stay alert, engaged, and responsive for up to 8 hours or more
