About the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI):
The purpose of the Indiana Department of Insurance is to protect Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. Consumers may need assistance with certain claim situations or just help in understanding how their policies work. Our other primary obligation is to monitor the financial solvency of the insurance companies domiciled in Indiana so that the legal promises made in insurance policies are honored. To these ends, our Department staff is committed to providing exceptional customer service for both our consumers and our companies, and to maintain a fair and objective viewpoint as we examine each issue and circumstance within our jurisdiction.
Role Overview:
The Senior Attorney position reports to the General Counsel and is responsible for providing legal advice to the different divisions within the Indiana Department of Insurance.
Salary Statement:
For attorneys with less than 5 years of experience since licensure, this position will be classified as an Attorney Associate, traditionally starting at an annual salary of $67,314. For attorneys with 5 or more years of experience since licensure, this position will be classified as Attorney Senior, traditionally starting at an annual salary of $85,020. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:

Must have excellent speaking, writing and editing abilities. Some specific responsibilities include:
- Advise Department divisions and personnel on compliance with Title 27 (Insurance statutes) of the Indiana Code
- Conduct legal research for the IDOI divisions
- Track National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) discussion and adoption of model laws
- Research and analyze legal issues
- Serve as IDOI Legislative Director
- Attend committee hearings for bills affecting Title 27 or insurance generally
- Provide committee reports to Governor’s office from (S) Insurance and Financial Institutions committee hearings and (H) Insurance committee hearings
- Provide first review of bill requests received by Governor’s office • Provide bill reports to Governor’s office on bill review requests
- Receive and respond to constituent inquiries received from legislators
- Conduct administrative rulemaking procedures
- Attend and participate on NAIC Legislative Liaison calls on behalf of the IDOI
- Provide legal analysis, strategy, and advice, as needed
- Respond to questions from other state agencies, legislative services agency, the public, consumer groups, and/or the insurance industry regarding Indiana insurance laws, regulations and bulletins
- Complete projects as assigned by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have
- A Doctorate of Jurisprudence;
- Indiana Bar Admission license in good standing;
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply relevant statutes, case law, and rules;
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing;
- Ability to successfully utilize a case management system to manage a docket, case information, party information, and serve orders;
- Strong legal research, writing, and litigation skills.
- Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
