Responsibilities of the Attorney I:
Under general supervision of the Chief Staff Attorney, this position will participate in the assistance of planning legal and administrative activities for the Legal Department on a regular basis. Will assist in various legal tasks related to writing legal documents and memorandums, conducting legal research to include public utility law and administrative law issues. In this position you will:

  • Provide legal opinion and prepare legal memorandums concerning various legislative acts and court decisions.
  • Conduct legal research. Provide assistance on public utility law and administrative law issues.
  • Summarize pre-filed testimony. Summarize legal filings posted on the Commission's Docket Management System.
  • Read and prepare citations to transcripts, draft Commission Orders and/or proofread Commission Orders. May review various other legal documents as requested by the Chief Staff Attorney.
  • Responsible for adhering to Rule 501, South Carolina Appellate Court Rules, Code of Judicial Conduct and state ethics laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned such as performing the role of Hearing Examiner.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school. Must be a member of the South Carolina Bar Association within six (6) months of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals.
  • Incumbent must have good communication and writing skills.
  • Incumbent must be able to work independently with accuracy and exercise a level of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Incumbent must have ability to interpret and apply law and judicial decisions.
  • Knowledge of public utility law would be helpful.
  • Knowledge of the laws of South Carolina.
  • Knowledge of the theories of legal research.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Position may involve in-state travel.
