YOUR ROLE

You will provide advice, counsel, and subject-matter expertise to the CareScout and Genworth family of businesses. You will help support a wide variety of matters, such as supporting the administration of in-force life insurance policies and annuity contracts, providing advice on intellectual property matters, and reviewing and researching new or amended laws and regulations regarding data privacy, and assisting with data privacy projects and requests. You will report to a Legal Director and serve as an integral member of the team responsible for helping the business achieve its goals while complying with applicable laws and regulations.

What you will be doing

  • Providing subject-matter expertise in support of the administration of in-force policies, including reviewing guardianships, conservatorships, trusts, power of attorney documents, and other similar documents as they relate to customer inquiries, claims, and requests
  • Filing renewals and extensions of the companies’ patents and trademarks and reviewing copyright requests
  • Advising on compliance with applicable requirements, such as HIPAA, GLBA, state insurance and consumer privacy laws, intellectual property and trademark laws
  • Provide review and assistance on requests regarding data privacy, including review of training materials, business and compliance projects, and policies and procedures
  • Providing advice and counsel on the impact of new laws and regulations
  • Leveraging business relationships, legal contacts, and technological resources to deliver superior legal support

What you bring

Required

  • JD degree from an accredited law school and licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Two to four years of experience at a reputable law firm, in-house legal department of a U.S. company or government agency, or comparable work experience
  • Experienced in insurance legal matters or similar experience in a comparable highly regulated industry
  • Adept at providing legal advice with a solution-oriented focus on achieving business priorities and goals, including the ability to simplify complex legal concepts for diverse audiences
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, including balancing multiple priorities while managing client and management expectations
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred

  • Strong knowledge of the insurance regulatory environment and issues
  • Life insurance and annuity experience, including claims and customer service
  • Knowledge and understanding of data privacy laws, including GLBA, HIPAA, as well as state insurance privacy laws and state consumer privacy laws (ex. California Consumer Privacy Act)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Patent Office filing requirements and procedures
  • Proven ability to use technology to provide efficient and accurate legal counsel
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and assess risks and to recommend effective risk mitigation strategies
  • Comfortable partnering with business clients at all levels of the organization
