ATTORNEY/LITIGATOR

LABOR & EMPLOYMENT

Murphy, Lamere & Murphy, P.C. seeks to hire an exceptional attorney with at least 3 to 5 years of labor and employment experience and excellent writing and oral advocacy skills in our labor and employment law practice group. Experience in related fields, including municipal law, litigation involving labor and employment issues, collective bargaining, conflicts of interest, and/or related issues is welcome but not required. Position Description:

MLM is a management-side law firm representing school districts and municipalities throughout Massachusetts. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing legal counsel, representation, advocacy, and litigation services to our clients, with a particular focus on labor and employment matters, including the following:

  • Providing strategic counsel on employment law matters, including anti-discrimination and anti-harassment laws, employee discipline, performance evaluations, wage and hour issues, unemployment, leave policies, and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Negotiating and drafting collective bargaining agreements and employment contracts for union and non-union employees
  • Representing, defending, and advocating for school and town clients in arbitrations and litigation at state and federal courts and administrative agencies
  • Preparing and representing witnesses
  • Conducting and advising clients on internal investigations, including Title IX
  • Drafting and amending school and town policies and employee handbooks
  • Conducting legal research and communicating advice to clients
  • Providing trainings to elected officials and school administrators
  • Performing similar or related work as required

This position requires daily in-person work and travel to our offices located conveniently off the Braintree Split (interchange of I-93, US-1, and Route 3 in Braintree, MA), as well as to schools, towns, and courts throughout Massachusetts as needed. Annual billable hour requirement of 1800 hours. Early morning, evening, and/or weekend work may be required depending on client needs.

Required Skills:

  • Strong advocacy and courtroom experience
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to negotiate and draft collective bargaining agreements and employment contracts
  • Ability to draft and file legal documents, including discovery requests and responses, pleadings, memoranda, orders, findings of fact and rulings of law, trial documents, witness preparation questions, and mediation memoranda
  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence, civil procedure, and appellate procedure
  • Ability to understand complex information and provide legal advice in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced and exciting work environment
  • Ability to exercise discretion and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential issues

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Member of the Massachusetts bar in good standing
  • At least three (3) to five (5) years of experience, preferably in the fields of civil litigation and labor/employment, municipal, and/or education law

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Starting Salary Range: $115,000 to $125,000, commensurate with qualifications
