Audiologist

JOB SUMMARY:

The Audiologist delivers high-quality, evidence-based audiological care within a tertiary hospital setting. This role includes conducting comprehensive patient assessments, performing advanced diagnostic evaluations, and developing individualized treatment plans for hearing and balance disorders.

The postholder works as part of a multidisciplinary team and contributes to collaborative patient care, supports service development and innovation, and actively participates in clinical education, research, and quality improvement initiatives.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation

  • Obtains detailed patient histories, including medical, developmental, social, educational, and familial aspects.

  • Performs otoscopic examinations to assess the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane, documenting any abnormalities.

  • Immittance-Based Assessment: Conducts multi-frequency tympanometry, acoustic reflex testing (including threshold, decay), and Eustachian tube function assessments to evaluate middle ear and auditory pathway integrity.

  • Behavioral Audiometric Evaluation: Selects and performs age- and condition-appropriate behavioral tests for pediatric and adult patients. These include Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA), Free-Field Audiometry, Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA), Pure-Tone Audiometry (air and bone conduction), extended high-frequency testing, and speech audiometry (SRT, WRS in quiet and noise).

  • Retro cochlear Evaluation: Administers specialized tests (e.g., Tone Decay, SISI, PI-PB) to screen for retro cochlear pathologies.

  • Central Auditory Processing: Performs basic central auditory processing screening tests (e.g., temporal processing, auditory figure-ground tasks) where applicable.

  • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): Performs and interprets Distortion Product and Transient Evoked OAEs.

  • Electrophysiological Testing: Conducts auditory evoked potential assessments such as ABR, ASSR, and ECochG as part of diagnostic protocols.

  • Vestibular Assessment: Participates in vestibular testing (e.g., VNG, caloric testing, VEMP, vHIT, and post urography) as appropriate.

  • Tinnitus and Sound Sensitivity Assessments: Administers tinnitus questionnaires and audiological tests including pitch/loudness matching, minimum masking level, and loudness discomfort level testing.

  • Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention: Participates in newborn hearing screening and early hearing detection programs, including diagnostic follow-up as needed.

Intervention and Management

  • Hearing Devices: Evaluates candidacy for and provide fitting, verification, programming, and troubleshooting of hearing aids, bone conduction devices, cochlear implants, and assistive listening systems.

  • Rehabilitation and Counseling: Delivers patient-centered aural rehabilitation, including counseling, auditory training, and communication strategies. Educate patients on hearing conservation and the use of protective devices.

  • Management of Specific Conditions: Supports the assessment and management of auditory processing disorders, ototoxicity monitoring, and noise-induced hearing loss, using evidence-based practices.

  • Provides ongoing support and follow-up to monitor patient progress and adapt management strategies as needed.

Patient-Centered Service Delivery

  • Provides timely and appropriate intervention to minimize the impact of hearing loss on communication, learning, and quality of life.

  • Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of assessment results, treatment plans, patient interactions, and outcomes.

  • Communicates clearly, compassionately, and effectively with patients, families, and caregivers regarding diagnoses, management options, and care plans.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Consultation

  • Collaborates with physicians (ENT, neurology, pediatrics), speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, case discussions, and care planning as needed.

  • Supports continuous improvement of clinical services by sharing insights and participating in departmental initiatives.

Quality Assurance, Research, and Professional Development

  • Follows clinical protocols and hospital policies to maintain high-quality, safe, and effective service delivery.

  • Participates in departmental quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits when requested.

  • Engages in clinical education activities, including mentoring students or interns under supervision.

  • Stays updated with current research, best practices, and advancements in audiology through continuing professional development and training.

Administration and Operational Support

  • Ensures proper use, maintenance, and daily calibration checks of audiological equipment.

  • Reports equipment issues promptly and support inventory tracking or supply needs where applicable.

  • Complies with all hospital infection control, safety, and documentation protocols.

  • Provides care that is respectful of cultural, linguistic, and individual differences.

  • Ensures that services are inclusive and accessible to diverse patient populations.

  • Upholds ethical principles in all clinical interactions, including informed consent, patient autonomy, and confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

ESSENTIAL
PREFERRED

Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited program in Audiology
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited program in Audiology

Experience
  • 5+ years of relevant clinical experience

  • Work experience in an acute pediatric academic medical center

  • More than 2 years of experience in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology.

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams within hospital settings.

  • Work experience in an acute pediatric academic medical center.

  • Experience in teaching and training audiology students or junior staff


Certification and Licensure
  • Licensure or Registration from country of origin if applicable

  • Holder of Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A) in Audiology from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association or from an internationally recognized accredited professional organization from country of origin

  • Eligible for licensure in Qatar after onboarding.
