How you will make an impact:

The Automation / Controls Engineer leads the controls engineering scope for assigned, well-defined tasks and projects under guidance, owning the full lifecycle (plan, design, build, integration, test, support) within the single-engineer model to deliver safe, reliable, accurate, repeatable, and maintainable systems in Class 7 cleanrooms and cGMP environments, transitioning first-line support to Manufacturing Engineering and Maintenance (remaining as second-line support).

  • Plans, tracks, and communicates work in the company-standard project/task management system; delivers scope on time and within budget.
  • Design and documentation: reads, drafts, and updates P&IDs; electrical schematics; pneumatic diagrams; panel layouts; field device layouts; BOMs; process flow diagrams; submits for review.
  • Build: performs enclosure/panel fabrication and wiring; field device conduit and wiring; follows NEC, UL, CE and internal standards.
  • Integration:
    • Implements and tests safety functions (e-stops, light curtains, safety relays) under guidance.
    • Configures operator controls, relays/contactors, transducers, pneumatics, motors and basic drives (e.g., DC/VFD/stepper) and process controllers.
    • Networking: sets up simple local equipment networks. Guided on advanced local and remote networking.
    • PLC/HMI: develops basic ladder logic routines and HMI screens; debounces/scales signals; monitors/controls common variables (temperature, pressure, speed, position, flow, level) via discrete/analog/serial/ethernet interfaces.
    • Test/debug: executes test plans; documents defects; participates in root cause and corrective actions.
  • Validation/documentation: supports cGMP validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) led by Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality; maintains accurate build/configuration records.
  • Support and continuous improvement: provide initial first-line support after equipment goes into service to achieve reliable operation; transition first-line support to Maintenance and remain second-line support; capture lessons learned; suggest incremental improvements to designs and standards; Support legacy controls systems commensurate with role level

This is an on-site role based out of our headquarters in Camarillo, CA.

The skills and experience you’ll need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (or similar) in a relevant discipline; equivalent experience considered.
  • Experience: 3+ years related controls/automation experience with prior industry exposure preferred.
  • Codes/standards: foundational knowledge of NEC, UL, CE; awareness of hazardous-area practices (Class I Div 1/Div 2, intrinsically safe circuits, explosion-proof enclosures).
  • CAD: basic proficiency in AutoCAD (Mechanical or Electrical) preferred.
  • PLC/HMI: foundational ladder logic and HMI development; demonstrates good documentation and code organization.
  • Motion: Pneumatic cylinders and basic motors/drives.
  • Networking: simple local networks.
  • Commissioning of low complexity systems; adherence to safety and cGMP practices.
  • Soft skills: organized documentation; time management; collaborative communication; willingness to learn and accept guidance.
  • Proficient with MS Office software including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and a working knowledge of a wide variety of software packages, operating systems, and equipment.

Occasional work may be done in an ISO Class 7 cleanroom environment. Powder free gloves, face masks, hairnets, gowns and shoe covers must be worn. Because smokers continue to shed thousands of smoke particles even hours after smoking a cigarette and these particles will damage our products, only non-smokers are permitted to enter or work in the cleanroom.

US BASE PAY SCALE $80,600 - 99,100

The base pay scale for this role is what Meissner reasonably expects to pay for the position although actual pay may vary from this scale depending on an applicant's experience.
