Position Summary
The Automation Designer is responsible for designing custom automated machinery, robotic systems, and tooling solutions to meet customer and internal requirements. This role works closely with engineers, project managers, detailers, and machine builders to develop accurate, manufacturable designs that support efficient build, installation, and operation of automation equipment.
Areas of Responsibility
- Design and develop 3D models and layouts for custom automation systems, robotic cells, fixtures, and special machinery.
- Create concept designs, detailed assemblies, and supporting documentation using CAD software.
- Collaborate with the Automation Business Manager, engineers, and project teams to define system requirements and design intent.
- Ensure designs meet functional, safety, quality, and manufacturability standards.
- Support bill of materials (BOM) development and assist with component selection.
- Review customer specifications, layouts, and standards to ensure compliance.
- Incorporate engineering changes and customer revisions into existing designs.
- Work closely with detailers and machine builders to resolve design or build issues.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and project meetings.
- Maintain organized project files and follow established CAD and data management standards.
- Identify opportunities for design standardization and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical support during machine build, debug, and installation phases.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, automation systems, and machine-building practices.
- Familiarity with robotics, motion systems, sensors, pneumatics, and basic electrical concepts.
- Ability to interpret customer specifications, layouts, and technical drawings.
- Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Competent computer skills; ERP system familiarity preferred.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in automation or machine design preferred.
- Experience designing special machinery, robotic cells, or custom automation equipment is highly desirable.
Work & Physical Requirements
- Full-time position, primarily on-site within the engineering/automation department.
- Ability to work in both office and shop environments as required.
- Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines.
- Travel may be required as needed for customer visits, onsite support, and machine installations.
