Autonomous Vehicle Operator , SteerAI

About SteerAI

SteerAI is an autonomous mobility technology company powered by VentureOne, the commercialization arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council. SteerAI’s advanced AI-powered autonomy stack, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute, empowers the logistics and defense industries by turning industrial vehicles into autonomous powerhouses that can handle complex off-road missions, transform operations and protect organizations' most important assets: their workforce.

About the role

We are looking for a Autonomous Vehicle Operator to operate SteerAI’s unmanned ground vehicle platforms during operational trial campaigns. This hands-on role involves operating vehicles through the Command and Control (C2) system and Fleet Management System (FMS), monitoring autonomous missions, supporting test execution, and performing field-level vehicle preparation

Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Operation: Operate Avs and other robots through the OCU/C2/FMS interface and remote control during tests and trials. Monitor autonomous mission execution and intervene when required, following established safety protocols.
  • Pre-Mission Preparation: Execute field deployment checklists, run system health checks, verify sensor functionality, and confirm communication links. Ensure vehicles are trial-ready prior to each mission run.
  • Real-Time Monitoring and Intervention: Monitor vehicle telemetry, autonomy state, and environmental conditions during missions. Execute emergency procedures (e-stop, return-to-base) when safety thresholds are reached.
  • Data Collection and Instrumentation: Position and configure telemetry equipment, manage onboard recording systems, and verify data integrity post-mission. Support the Field Test Engineer in executing instrumentation plans and validating that data capture meets trial requirements.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform field maintenance, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and escalate technical problems to the engineering team. Maintain vehicle readiness between trial runs.
  • Test Execution Support: Assist the Field Test Engineer with scenario setup, adherence to test procedures, and documentation of mission observations. Be prepared to take on basic test coordination duties when required, including running pre-briefed scenarios and recording results against success criteria.

Qualifications

  • Technical diploma or bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 4+ Experience operating unmanned ground or aerial vehicles, robotic systems, or remote-controlled platforms.
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle systems, sensor suites (cameras, GNSS, lidar), and communication systems.
  • Comfortable working in outdoor field environments in various weather conditions.
  • Methodical approach to checklists, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Troubleshooting skills for electromechanical and software systems.
  • Exposure to structured test procedures, checklists, or test and evaluation frameworks.
  • Ability to document observations, log test results, and contribute to post-mission reporting.
  • Valid driver’s license.
