ABOUT THIS POSITION


The Aviation Department manages and operates the Phoenix Airport System which consists of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Deer Valley Airport, and Goodyear Airport. The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has consistently been ranked as one of the top ten busiest airports in the nation. Serving more than 125,000 passengers daily, with over 1,200 flights per day, the airport has a total economic impact of more than $38 billion per year.

The Aviation Department is seeking motivated and dedicated Aviation Dispatchers to join our team. Aviation Dispatchers in the Airport Command Center are responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls to Police, Fire, Operations, and Maintenance airport personnel.

Duties include:

  • Emergency call taking for airport emergencies (security related issues, medical, fire response, etc.).
  • Operating and monitoring several computerized alarm systems simultaneously (2+ monitors).
  • Lightning detection, advanced fire warning, visual surveillance, and other computerized access control systems that must be monitored 24/7.
  • Positions will operate a paging system, multi-line telephone switchboard system, multi-channel radio console, and other communication equipment in providing accurate and timely dissemination of information and transmissions to field units.
  • Collecting, updating, and tracking information on computerized and/or printed forms. Performing general clerical duties in a fast-paced environment that communicates calls for service to airport operations and other emergency situations in real time.
  • Dispatching aviation police officers to emergency and non-emergency calls on airport property.
  • Dispatching Airport Operations staff and Facilities and Services Maintenance workers to service calls throughout the airport campus.
  • Providing customer service to the airports internal and external customers by answering inquiries, providing directions, and resolving customer concerns.
  • Working independently and as a team in a command center environment.

The Aviation Department is a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week operation. Employees are required to work in-person (no remote option) a varied schedule that consists of evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Vacation requests and shift assignments are determined by seniority which could require working 2nd or 3rd shift for at least 6 months.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Able to multitask.
  • Able to pass a Criticall test with a score of 85% or better.
  • Able to listen carefully and identify key information from callers.
  • Able to remain calm and exercise considerable judgment while making decisions in emergency situations.

SALARY


Pay Range: $23.18 to $35.96 per hour.
Hiring Range: $23.18 to $ 26.83 per hour.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 344. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in the operation of two-way radio and/or telephone switchboard equipment, including some experience in general typing and clerical work
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience with:
    • Virtual machines.
    • Multi-monitor arrays.
    • Alarm monitoring or access control systems.
    • Specialized call taking/dispatch software and/or Video Surveillance Systems.
  • Switchboard experience in a high-volume, "multi-line" call center.
  • Civilian, commercial, and/or military airport operational experience.
  • Experience in the emergency medical field, call taking procedures, or any 911 call center experience.
  • Experience in Emergency Management setting or environment with life safety/security/property loss implications.
  • Experience coordinating, directing, assigning in a high-traffic 2-way radio environment, or utilizing multiple simultaneous talk groups.
  • Customer service experience, such as high-volume telephone-based customer contact, or seamless service.
  • Fluency in a secondary language, highly desired.
