Azure Data Engineer

JOB SUMMARY:

The Azure Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and optimizing enterprise-grade data pipelines and analytics platforms within a regulated banking environment. This role focuses on scalable data engineering solutions in Azure, supporting reporting, analytics, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The Data Engineer works closely with infrastructure, security, and compliance teams to ensure data solutions meet performance, governance, and security requirements.

This role may be remote with occasional onsite support in the Detroit Metro Area, MI.

GENERAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Architect, develop, and maintain Azure-based (Azure Data Factory, Databricks) data pipelines using modern ELT/ETL practices.

  • Design scalable data models and structures to support analytics, reporting, and regulatory use cases.

  • Integrate data from core banking systems, vendor platforms, and internal applications.

  • Optimize data pipelines for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.

  • Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and error handling.

  • Apply data security best practices including encryption, role-based access control, and audit logging.

  • Support data governance initiatives including lineage, classification, retention, and regulatory reporting readiness.

  • Collaborate with Information Security and Compliance teams to ensure adherence to banking regulations (FFIEC, GLBA).

  • Monitor and troubleshoot pipeline failures and performance bottlenecks.

  • Maintain technical documentation, data flow diagrams, and operational runbooks.

  • Support downstream analytics and reporting teams with reliable, well-structured datasets.

  • Assist in evaluating and implementing new Azure data services and technologies.

  • Participate in incident response and root-cause analysis related to data systems.

  • Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and internal banking policies.

  • Demonstrate strong ownership, accountability, and a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Adheres to all Federal and State laws and regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act.

  • All other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.

Skills:

  • Strong proficiency with Azure Data Services (e.g., data pipelines, data storage, analytics platforms).

  • Advanced SQL skills and experience with large datasets.

  • Experience with Python, Spark, or similar data processing frameworks.

  • Deep understanding of data modeling, ELT/ETL, and distributed systems.

  • Knowledge of data security, governance, and compliance in regulated environments.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Ability to design solutions that balance performance, cost, and regulatory requirements.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of hands-on Azure Data Engineering experience preferred.

  • Experience working in financial services or other regulated industries strongly preferred.

  • Experience supporting enterprise reporting, risk, or regulatory data use cases.
