OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief, the Battalion Chief manages the activities and operations of one or more sections within the department, such as administration, training, operations, logistics, special operations, volunteer liaison, or privacy officer. This role ensures compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines within assigned areas and provides general and complex assistance to the Director of FireEMS (Chief) and Deputy Chief.
The Battalion Chief plans, organizes, and directs multi-company operations at emergency incidents and planned events. This position requires high-level leadership to mentor and evaluate personnel, manage budgets, and represent the department at public functions. Candidates must be prepared to assume the duties of the Incident Commander and may temporarily assume the duties of the Deputy Chief or Director of FireEMS as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Meet performance standards established with the direct supervisor.

Manage the organization, staffing, and operational activities of assigned bureaus and programs.

Participate in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for assigned areas.

Create and implement innovative services, monitor effectiveness, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Manage the implementation of changes and oversee service quality.

Assist with the selection of personnel; mentor, direct, supervise, and evaluate assigned staff.

Counsel, commend, or discipline personnel as appropriate.

Assist in the development and administration of the assigned budget and forecast needed funds.

Monitor and approve expenditures.

Coordinate assigned services with other departments, divisions, and outside agencies.

Represent the department at public functions and exercise decision-making authority at meetings.

Respond to emergency incidents and assume duties as Incident Commander, Command Staff, or ICS General Staff.

Resolve difficult inquiries and investigate complaints to implement corrective actions.

Provide staff assistance to the Director of Fire and EMS, including preparing and presenting reports.

Manage department staffing software for accuracy and efficiency.
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / EXPERIENCE
Required:
-
Associate Degree in fire science, emergency management, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field.

Five (5) years of full-time fire and EMS related experience.

Three (3) years of full-time command staff experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

AEMT or Paramedic certified with the State of Utah.

Certified Firefighter III in the State of Utah (ProBoard or IFSAC).

Certified Fire Officer I in the State of Utah (ProBoard or IFSAC).

NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700a, and 800b Certifications.

Valid Utah State driver's license.

Fire Inspector I or Company Officer Inspector certification (within 1 year of hire).
