Job Summary:
The Bedridden / Coma Care Nurse is responsible for providing dedicated nursing and personal care to patients who are bedridden or in a coma, within their home environment. The nurse ensures round-the-clock monitoring, medical assistance, and emotional support while maintaining hygiene, safety, and dignity of the patient.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Monitoring & Care
- Provide continuous nursing care to bedridden or coma patients as per doctor’s instructions.
- Monitor vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, temperature, and respiration.
- Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, injections, and tube feedings.
- Turn and reposition patients at regular intervals to prevent bedsores and ensure comfort.
- Assist with physiotherapy and passive exercises as per medical guidance.
2. Hygiene & Comfort
- Maintain the patient’s personal hygiene by giving bed baths, oral care, and grooming assistance.
- Keep bedding, medical equipment, and surroundings clean and sanitized.
- Change linens, dressings, and adult diapers as required.
- Ensure the patient’s comfort through proper positioning, temperature control, and gentle handling.
3. Medical & Emergency Support
- Handle tracheostomy, catheter care, suctioning, and feeding via NG or PEG tube (if applicable).
- Identify and report early signs of infection, pressure ulcers, or health deterioration.
- Respond to medical emergencies and follow CPR and first aid protocols until medical help arrives.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate nursing notes, medication charts, and daily patient progress reports.
- Update the doctor and nursing supervisor regularly about the patient’s condition.
- Communicate effectively with the family regarding care routines and updates.
5. Emotional & Family Support
- Provide empathetic care and emotional support to the patient and their family.
- Educate family members about patient care, hygiene, and safety procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Employer Requirements:
Education:
- GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) or B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution
- Registered Nurse with the State Nursing Council
Experience:
- Minimum 2–4 years of experience in ICU, palliative care, or home-based coma/bedridden patient care
Skills & Competencies:
- Expertise in patient handling, suctioning, catheterization, and tube feeding
- Knowledge of infection control and wound care management
- Strong observation, communication, and documentation skills
