Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7 am – 3:30 pm; some nights and weekends may be required
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Behavioral and Developmental Support Specialist provides direct, individualized support services to children enrolled in Head Start who are suspected of or diagnosed with developmental delays, behavioral challenges, or special needs. This position works collaboratively with the Mental Health Coordinator, Disabilities/Child Development Coordinator, classroom teachers, and family support staff to ensure children receive inclusive, high-quality educational experiences aligned with their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and individualized action plans.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
- Collaborate with the Mental Health Coordinator & Disabilities/ Child Development Coordinator, classroom teacher, and family support team to support the needs of each child with special developmental, behavioral, or learning needs.
- Implement services and activities designated on the child's Individual Educational Plan to ensure the child receives an inclusive experience.
- Assists in formulating an Individualized Action Plan to address atypical behaviors.
- Prepare ongoing documentation and maintain records on the child's behavior and development needed to initiate the Head Start referral process for special needs or mental health services.
- Aides the child to improve educational and social/emotional development and provides consistent positive reinforcement to facilitate the learning environment.
- Employee provides one-on-one assistance in the classroom setting for children with behavioral challenges, developmental concerns and identified special needs.

- Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Education:
At minimum an Associate degree in Psychology, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or Social Work with 2 years of supervised experience with special needs children or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Annual physical and negative TB test, CPR, and First Aid Certifications.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Experience:
1 to 3 years of mental health and/or developmental disabilities experience. A minimum of 2 years of experience with special needs children.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to complete a criminal background check and maintain an active Criminal Background Check (CBC) Qualification letter through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Child Development.
The employee must be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.
Ability to speak Spanish as a second language is preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Background checks with state and Federal law enforcement agencies are required. Selected applicants must submit to a pre-employment substance abuse screening test and receive a negative result for the use of drugs and alcohol as specified in agency policies. Must submit and receive negative results for random testing of same. The employee must have a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Must be able to pass a post-offer physical examination.
