The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) plays a critical role in supporting clients through their recovery journey in a structured substance abuse treatment environment. BHTs ensure a safe, therapeutic, and supportive milieu, monitor client behavior, support clinical programming, and assist the treatment team in delivering high-quality care.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and monitor clients to ensure safety and compliance with facility rules, schedules, and treatment plans.
- Conduct regular rounds and perform client headcounts per policy.
- Document observations, client interactions, incidents, and progress accurately and in a timely manner in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Support clients in daily living activities, including hygiene, chores, transportation, and medication line.
- Facilitate or support therapeutic and recovery-oriented groups, community meetings, and recreational activities.
- Conduct drug/alcohol screenings and property searches as required.
- Intervene appropriately in crises, de-escalate situations, and follow emergency protocols.
- Escort clients to appointments, activities, or off-site events as needed.
- Maintain professional boundaries while building rapport with clients in a compassionate and supportive manner.
- Communicate relevant information to clinical, medical, and administrative staff to ensure coordinated care.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and supervision as assigned.
- Uphold all facility policies, state/federal regulations, and confidentiality standards (HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2).
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework in psychology, social work, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in behavioral health, addiction treatment, or a residential setting preferred.
- Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in a residential treatment environment with frequent client interaction.
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, occasionally lift up to 25 lbs, and respond quickly in emergencies.
- May involve evening, overnight, weekend, or holiday shifts.
