The Behavioral Health Unit Coordinator (BHUC) position is responsible for providing a wide array of direct clinical services including assessments, supportive contacts and referrals serving adults and youth who are struggling with mental health, substance abuse, or the combination. The BHUC is responsible for working with the Marquette University Police Department officers to provide outreach to mental health consumers who are having contacts with police, implement follow up on these cases to ensure adequate connection to resources, and conduct emergency mental health assessments and interventions for children, youth, and adults. The BHUC’s workspace shall be in the Marquette University Police Department and will collaborate with a Behavioral Health Officer to form the Behavioral Health Unit, overseen by the Lieutenant assigned to the Support Services Division. The BHUC will respond with police to mental health calls and work to engage and refer clients to appropriate mental health services.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Act as a resource for Behavioral Health Officer and Patrol Officers regarding case managers/services/mental health history.
2. Follow up with clients who frequent police services due to mental health illnesses to ensure adequate connection to resources.
3. Maintain documentation on clients.
4. Perform assessments to acquire level of care.
5. Create and deliver training for police and civilians in the community.
6. Act as MUPD representative on the CARE Team.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in mental health, criminal justice, or social work
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience working as part of a case management support team
