A Blood Bank Technologist is responsible for collecting, testing, processing, and storing blood and blood components to ensure safe transfusions for patients. They follow strict medical, laboratory, and safety standards to maintain the quality of blood products and support hospital clinicians.
Key Roles & Responsibilities1. Blood Collection & Processing
- Collect blood samples from donors (when required).
- Label, process, separate, and store blood components (RBC, plasma, platelets).
- Ensure proper storage conditions (temperature, storage equipment monitoring).
2. Laboratory Testing
- Perform blood grouping (ABO, Rh typing).
- Conduct cross-matching before transfusion.
- Screen donors’ blood for infections (HIV, HBV, HCV, malaria, syphilis, etc.).
- Check antibody screening and identification.
3. Quality Control & Safety
- Follow all NABH/NABL standards and SOPs.
- Maintain aseptic and safe laboratory practices.
- Conduct daily quality checks on equipment.
- Monitor expiry dates and maintain inventory levels.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of donors, tests, and blood units.
- Manage blood inventory in software systems.
- Generate daily/weekly blood availability and usage reports.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines (CDSCO, FDA-equivalent depending on country).
5. Coordination & Support
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, and hospital staff for blood availability.
- Assist during emergency transfusion requests.
- Educate donors about blood donation processes and safety.
6. Equipment Handling
- Operate and maintain centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, cell washers, etc.
- Calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of blood banking and transfusion medicine.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure (especially in emergencies).
- Basic computer and laboratory software skills.
- Strong communication with clinicians and donors.
Educational Qualification
- BMLT Only.
- Experience in blood bank or pathology lab (varies by role).
- License/certification as per state health authority (if applicable).
