Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Bookkeeper with construction industry experience to maintain accurate financial records and support our accounting operations. The ideal candidate will understand construction-specific accounting practices, including job costing, retention tracking, and progress billing.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Accounting Operations
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including subcontractor invoices, material purchases, and progress billings
- Reconcile bank statements, credit card accounts, and general ledger accounts on a monthly basis
- Maintain accurate job cost records and track expenses by project
- Process payroll or coordinate with payroll service provider, including certified payroll reporting if required
- Monitor and record retention amounts held and owed on construction contracts
- Track and allocate costs to specific job numbers and cost codes
- Assist with preparation of progress billing and AIA payment applications
- Maintain lien waiver documentation and ensure compliance with lien release requirements
- Monitor subcontractor insurance certificates and ensure they remain current
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare monthly financial reports for management review
- Assist with job profitability analysis and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- Maintain organized documentation for audits and tax preparation
- Ensure compliance with prevailing wage requirements when applicable
- Support year-end closing processes and work with external accountants or CPAs
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of bookkeeping experience, with at least 1-2 years in construction or a related industry
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks & UKG)
- Solid knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger processes
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and ability to create basic spreadsheets and reports
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Experience with AIA billing formats and construction payment applications
- Knowledge of union payroll and certified payroll reporting
- Familiarity with lien law and mechanics lien requirements
- Understanding of multi-state payroll
