Bookmobile Manager

Job Summary

Brown County Library seeks a dynamic Library Bookmobile Manager to bring a love for literacy- including books, programs, and lifelong learning-directly to Brown County communities. From schools and senior centers to parks and local events, the Bookmobile Manager ensures that everyone in Brown County has access to the library, no matter where they are. More than just a mobile library driver, this role is all about building connections, forging partnerships, and creating welcoming spaces for readers of all ages.

The Bookmobile Manager works closely with Public Service Managers and Library Administration to advance systemwide initiatives and strengthen partnerships with local organizations. The position will play a key role in outreach and community engagement, turning every stop into an opportunity for discovery, education, and connection. Whether it’s sparking a child’s love of reading, connecting adults to resources, or collaborating with local organizations, this role embodies the library’s mission to bring people and ideas together.

Job Summary:
The Bookmobile Manager is responsible for coordinating, planning, scheduling, and supervising the activities, collections, and spaces within the bookmobile. Using professional knowledge and skills, they provide a safe and welcoming environment, diverse collections, quality programming, and excellent library service.

Typical Schedule:
Mondays - Fridays: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Evening and weekend hours are required.

Essential Duties

1. Implement bookmobile services within community

a. Research, propose, implement, and promote approved Bookmobile stops including special events
b. Communicate with community partners and library staff about bookmobile services
c. Plan, implement, and promote the programs and services offered by the bookmobile in alignment with Brown County Library standards
d. Maintain appropriate library collections by working with the Collection Development Manager and appropriate selectors
e. Plan space and amenities to meet the needs of customers and align with system standards
f. Oversee safe operating conditions and maintenance of the bookmobile

2. Ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of the bookmobile
a. Meet customer needs for information by answering questions and locating appropriate library resources
b. Recommend books and other resources and services based on customer preferences
c. Provide help with library technology such as the library catalog and digital resources.
d. Use the library’s circulation system to check materials in and out, and perform customer service for library patrons
e. Maintain orderly and attractive collections and withdraw items as appropriate
f. Ensure that materials are in the correct order on the shelves (Shelf Reading) and shift as necessary
g. Recruit, train, and supervise bookmobile volunteers
h. Oversee accurate cash handling and create deposits, and other financial responsibilities for the bookmobile

3. Develop and implement Brown County Library-wide initiatives
a. Attend Library meetings and training to maintain knowledge base
b. Compile information for assigned operational reports
c. Analyze data to evaluate the success of programs and services
d. Develop programs and/or services eligible for grant funding, and work with Administration to write and submit grant applications
e. Plan, prepare, and implement grant programs with Administrative oversight
f. Develop internal procedures, and ensure compliance with Brown County Library standards and policies
g. Prepare and submit Brown County Library budget requests and Friends of the Brown County Library funding requests for the bookmobile

4. Build and maintain community relationships through networking and outreach
a. Strengthen community contacts, relating library objectives and services that meet community needs
b. Act as a liaison to community groups and organizations to build partnerships that extend library services through that group
c. Speak publicly as an expert in a subject area or about library services
d. Work with community organizations to provide services or programming that meet customer needs
e. Contribute to and participate in professional activity at the local, state, and national levels

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience
A Master's Degree in Library Science/Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university, plus two years of professional library experience; or a bachelor's degree plus five years of professional library experience; or any equivalent combination of training, education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications
Valid Wisconsin Driver's License

1. Knowledge of current and developing technologies as they relate to public library operations, and services
2. Effectively administer and interpret Brown County Library policies and procedures
3. Exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions
4. Detailed knowledge of public library principles, practices and techniques
5. Assess users’ needs and provide consistently exceptional customer service
6. Complete closing duties, including clearing and securing the bookmobile
7. Identify problems and take action to develop appropriate solutions or refer to Administration when necessary
8. Make presentations to varying sized groups of youth and adults
9. Effectively coordinate and direct the work of others
10. Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances
11. Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
12. Represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner
13. Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base
14. Work independently with minimal supervision
15. Appropriately multitask and prioritize
16. Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail
17. Follow detailed verbal and written instructions
18. Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library
19. Adapt to changes in the work environment
20. Effectively use general office equipment and software, including but not limited to, computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, cash drawer, audio-visual equipment, word processing, and email
21. Demonstrate proficient technology skills, including but not limited to, working with the library specific software and databases, and efficient use of Automated Materials Handling system


This position works with the public. Evening and weekend work may be required. As part of a county-wide library system, reassignment to another branch may occur.
