Job Summary

A Boom Mobile Crane Operator is responsible for safely operating a mobile crane (truck-mounted or all-terrain) with a boom, to lift, move, and place materials, equipment, and heavy loads at construction or industrial sites in Qatar. The role requires adherence to strict safety procedures, coordination with rigging teams, and ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crane Operation
  • Operate a mobile crane (boom) to lift, lower, extend, retract, and swing loads as required.
  • Set up the crane at the job site, ensuring proper placement, stability, and leveling using outriggers.
  • Calculate load weights and crane capacities to prevent overloads and ensure safe operations (in line with TUEV-SUD certification requirements).
  • Respond to signals from a single, clearly identified signaler/rigger during lifts.
  • Maneuver crane boom and hoist to safely place loads in the required positions.
  • Pre-Operation Inspection & Maintenance
  • Conduct daily inspections of the crane, including mechanical (boom, cables, hydraulics), safety devices, and structural components.
  • Lubricate, clean, and maintain the crane as per manufacturer and company guidelines.
  • Report equipment defects, malfunctions, or safety hazards to the supervisor immediately.
  • Rigging and Load Handling
  • Assist or coordinate with riggers to properly attach loads using slings, hooks, or other rigging gear.
  • Verify the stability and security of the load before lifting.
  • Ensure ground conditions are suitable for lifting operations — check for soft ground, slope, or hazards.
  • Use correct rigging techniques to minimize risk during lifts.
  • Safety Compliance
  • Adhere to all company, local, and international safety regulations regarding crane operations. Examples include stopping lifts when unsafe conditions (e.g., high wind) occur.
  • Participate in lift planning, risk assessments, and toolbox talks.
  • Maintain good communication with ground personnel (signalers, riggers) to ensure coordinated and safe operations.
  • Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate records of crane operations, daily checklists, inspections, maintenance, and any incidents.
  • Fill out job tickets, lifting reports, and maintenance logs as required. Surfing Wave
  • Report near-misses, accidents, or unsafe conditions and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Certification & Training
  • Hold a valid certificate of competence for mobile crane operation, as per Qatari requirements (e.g., TUV-SUD certification).
  • Ensure familiarity with the specific crane model in use, including capacity charts, manufacturer manuals, and load-limiting devices.
  • Coordination & Teamwork
  • Coordinate with site managers, engineers, and supervisors to understand lifting requirements and placement.
  • Work closely with riggers, signalers, and other operators to execute lifts efficiently and safely.
  • Participate in emergency drills and respond appropriately in case of incidents.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Typically 4–5 years (or more) of mobile crane operating experience, especially in construction or oil & gas.
  • Certification: Valid mobile crane operator certificate for the type and capacity of crane.
  • Driving License: Valid Qatari driving license, possibly with a crane-vehicle endorsement.
  • Physical Fitness: Good eyesight, hearing, and reflexes; must be medically fit for crane operations.
  • Language: Proficiency in English is usually required for safety communication; knowledge of Arabic can be beneficial.
  • Work Conditions: Willingness to work in a variety of site conditions, which may include heat, night shifts, and in remote locations.
