Position Summary
The Building Substitute Teacher is a full-time, campus-based substitute who provides daily classroom coverage as needed across grade levels. This role supports consistent instruction, maintains classroom culture and routines, and assists with school operations when not assigned to a classroom.
The ideal candidate is flexible, confident with classroom management, and committed to maintaining a positive, orderly learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Classroom Coverage & Instruction
- Provide daily substitute coverage across classrooms and grade levels as assigned
- Implement teacher lesson plans and deliver instruction aligned to HLA expectations
- Maintain a structured, supportive learning environment and consistent classroom routines
- Use effective classroom management strategies to ensure student safety and engagement
- Provide support for small-group instruction, intervention blocks, or supervised learning as assigned
Student Support & School Culture
- Uphold schoolwide behavior expectations and reinforce a positive school culture
- Support transitions, arrival/dismissal, lunch/recess, and supervision duties as needed
- Communicate student progress or concerns to school leadership and teachers
Professional Responsibilities
- Arrive prepared, follow school procedures, and maintain professionalism at all times
- Collaborate with office staff and leadership to respond quickly to coverage needs
- Complete daily notes and documentation for classroom teachers, as needed
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school policies and expectations
Additional Support When Not Covering Classes
- Assist with tutoring, academic intervention, student supervision, or operational support
- Support instructional teams with copying/material preparation as assigned
- Provide coverage for testing sessions, small groups, or short-term pull-outs when needed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (minimum: high school diploma/GED with relevant experience)
- Substitute teaching authorization/certification (or eligibility) as required by state/district
- Experience working with children in educational settings
- Strong classroom management skills and ability to build rapport quickly
- Reliability, flexibility, and strong communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior teaching or substitute teaching experience in elementary settings
- Experience working in structured school environments with clear routines and expectations
- Ability to support small-group instruction in literacy and/or math
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus (if relevant)
