SUMMARY
The Bus Operations Dispatcher supports the supervisory team in maintaining efficient shuttle bus operations by assigning vehicles, directing drivers, and ensuring procedural compliance. Allocates resources strategically to meet customer needs and deliver high-quality service, including providing direct customer assistance when required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Driver Assignment & Shift Management: Assign drivers to designated parking lots for optimal coverage and timeliness. Address real-time issues such as delays, accidents, or vehicle issues, ensuring smooth shift handovers, proper operational coverage, and adherence to break and meal schedules.
2. Driver Monitoring: Oversee the activities of 30-40 drivers per shift, including radio communication, uniform and vehicle inspections, and adherence to operational standards for spacing and customer service.
3. Fleet Management: Use the AT&T Fleet Management System (Geotab) to monitor driver performance, vehicle locations, route adherence, and compliance with safety and operational protocols.
4. Personnel & Safety Recommendations: Advise supervisors on operational and personnel issues, recommending changes in areas such as staffing, safety hazards, and maintenance.
5. Information & Public Relations: Provide accurate information to the public, employees, and airport personnel. Respond to service requests and help direct airport traffic as needed.
6. Administrative Tasks: Complete required documentation, including vehicle inspection reports, work orders, shift logs, and training records. Refuel or charge buses as necessary.
7. Communication: Answer calls, document attendance-related issues, and coordinate with supervisors on driver availability.
8. Emergency Response: Respond to emergency calls, assist with airfield transport as needed, and recognize safety hazards. Perform light cleaning and assist passengers with baggage when required.
9. Supervisory Role: Act as a supervisory designee when necessary, handling vehicle accidents, property damage, and on-the-job injuries. Ensure accurate reporting, photo documentation, and witness statements.
10. Operational support during Irregular Operations: Assist passengers and manage public areas during irregular operations, such as inclement weather, holidays, or emergencies.
11. Emergency Support: Provide aid for airport operations in crowd control, fire watches, and escorts during irregular and emergency events.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficient in reading and writing to ensure accurate completion of required documentation.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel for effective reporting and administrative tasks.
- Knowledge of fleet management systems to monitor operations, track performance, and enhance service efficiency.
- Strong interpersonal skills to courteously engage with the public, representing the airport professionally.
- Clear communication skills for effective radio transmissions and customer interactions.
- Competency in the safe operation of all shuttle bus models.
- Ability to accurately follow both verbal and written instructions.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
- Must be available to work any assigned weekday, weekend, evening and holiday shifts, and other times as needed due to emergency/urgent situations, such as inclement weather. Subject to call backs to work in emergency situations.
- Requires Class B CDL with Passenger and Air Brakes Endorsements and the ability to receive and maintain a city driving permit.
- Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.
- The CDL requirement will add an additional 2.5% to the base salary listed above. If a 2nd or 3rd shift is assigned after the training period, a shift differential of 2.5% will also be added.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year(s) of relevant experience.
- MUST HOLD A VALID CLASS A OR B CDL WITH A PASSENGER AND AIR BRAKE ENDORSEMENTS.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Dispatching experience
- Experience in bus operations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Positions in this class typically require grasping, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
- Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking extended periods of time.
- Light to moderate lifting when performing tasks.
- To comply with bus manufacturer specifications, a candidate’s weight may not exceed 350 pounds.
- Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.
- Must be able to pass the City of Charlotte pre-employment physical.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
