Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; OR High school diploma or GED. Three years of mass transportation experience and experience in resolving operational problems related to scheduled or special services, accident emergencies and equipment failures to include one year of experience in a supervisory capacity are required. Completion of 60 semester credits from a college or university may substitute for two years of mass transportation experience. Experience in the Transit Instructor classification will be credited as supervisory experience; OR High school diploma or GED. Four years as a Bus Operator are required. Completion of 60 semester credits from a college or university may substitute for two years of mass transportation experience. The DTPW classification of Bus Traffic Controller performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to the provisions of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Regulations. Proof of education and work experience to meet minimum qualifications must be presented and will be verified.

Recruitment Notes


The Bus Traffic Control position needs to have the ability to prioritize and manage real-time communications via two-way radio with bus operators, field supervisors, and maintenance personnel in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment where quick decision-making is critical. They work in a closed room with a centralized control center, where distractions are minimized to maintain focus on monitoring and managing bus operations effectively.

Experience in coordinating emergency responses, including accidents, passenger disturbances, vehicle breakdowns, and natural disasters, is essential. The candidate will need to prepare detailed operational logs, reports, and records. Familiarity with Automated Vehicle Locating (AVL) systems, including monitoring metrics such as bus headways, mechanical breakdowns, passenger counts, and stop announcements, is preferred.
