POSTION TITLE: BUYER

DEPARTMENT: Purchasing

REPORTS TO: Manager, Materials

HOURS/SCHEDULE: 8:00am-4:30pm

HOURLY/SALARY STATUS: Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Buyer is responsible for managing a variety of material requirements to support the needs of the company.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Procure raw materials, components, and finished goods in a timely and cost-effective manner, with emphasis on steel/aluminum products, upholstery materials, and molded plastic items.
  • Support negotiations with raw material suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and availability with delivery requirements.
  • Support Fabric Council with sourcing activities and assisting in developing new supplier relationships.
  • Support activities related to an established Asian fabricator handling direct-to-customer sales orders, as needed.
  • Resolve supply chain issues to maintain material flow and minimize delays.
  • Manage buyer’s workbench and MRP exception messages to ensure on-time orders.
  • Maintain parts and supplier records within MRP to reflect changes in lead time, order quantity, and demand.
  • As necessary, work collaboratively with suppliers to expedite orders to meet changes in demand.
  • Utilize data collection and market research techniques to establish sources of supply, assess vendor performance, and support demand forecasting.
  • Assist in evaluating supplier agreements, assessing supplier performance, and demand forecasting.
  • Use basic statistical tools for demand forecasting, cost analysis, and supply planning.

COMPUTER SKILLS

  • Experience with major ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, IFS) is preferred.
  • Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Excel, Outlook, and Word).
  • Presentation skills with Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Video conferencing software such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business field will accept equivalent experience.
  • 2-5 years professional purchasing in traditional manufacturing environment
  • Solid negotiation and business development skills required.
  • Exposure to international supplier relationships preferred.
  • Understanding of supplier relationship management and materials requirements planning (MRP).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with vendors, management, and co-workers.
  • APICS or other professional certifications a plus.
  • Ability to read and understand material drawings a plus.
  • Sound understanding of coil, sheet, general line, tube steel, upholstery material, and molded plastic items sources a plus.
