Summary: JH Kelly has grown into one of the largest mechanical contractors in the Pacific Northwest. Our Projects encompass everything from building foundations, structural steel, and all types of process and material moving equipment to intricate process piping and instrumentation & control systems. The Buyer is a vital part of our construction supply chain, serving as a primary point of contact for vendors and manufacturers. This mid-level role involves planning, directing, and coordinating the procurement of equipment, products, and materials essential for our projects. Working closely with engineering, estimators, project management, and field teams, you’ll ensure seamless job site deliveries. The ideal candidate brings experience in purchasing industrial and commercial construction commodities, including:
Metals: Steel, rebar, copper, aluminum, iron
Fabricated Products:
HVAC/plumbing equipment and supplies (piping, ductwork)
Electrical components (wiring, conduits, transformers)
Fasteners and hardware (bolts, screws, valves, fittings)
We’re looking for someone with strong organizational skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to negotiate effectively while fostering positive vendor relationships to secure timely, cost-effective procurement.
Salary Range: $30 - $55 per hour (DOE), FLSA non-exempt (OT eligible).
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintaining purchase order accuracy to ensure high-quality standards.
- Enhancing delivery reliability while reducing lead times to improve operational efficiency.
- Build stronger vendor and subcontractor partner relationships that lead to better customer service and lower costs.
- Improving internal customer satisfaction ratings through enhanced communication, proactive problem-solving, and consistently exceeding service expectations. Meeting or exceeding key stakeholders’ expectations.
- Review purchase requests to ensure accurate and sufficient information.
- Mentor Jr. Buyers for professional development.
- Issue purchase orders with accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure timely purchase and delivery of quality materials, equipment, and services.
- Prepare and distribute quotes for bidding and conduct thorough spreadsheet analyses of bid results to inform the awarding of purchase orders to suppliers and subcontractors.
- Negotiate ongoing cost savings with suppliers, value analysis, and combining requirements to take advantage of volume discounts where appropriate.
- Contact suppliers for adjustments involving replacement or return of material or equipment due to non-conformance, defect, cancellation of order, or price variation.
- Assist Accounts Payable in resolving invoice and delivery discrepancies.
- Participate in the facilitation of purchasing policies, procedures, and systems.
- Maintain proactive and positive relationships within the crafts, including shop and field craft personnel.
- Foster positive relationships with customer representatives, vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, safety, CAD/BIM, accounting, IT, and all project teams.

Experience / Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Minimum of 5 years of purchasing experience, preferably in industrial and commercial construction.
Proven experience sourcing and purchasing construction commodities, including:
Metals: Steel, rebar, copper, aluminum, iron.
Fabricated Products:
HVAC/plumbing equipment and supplies (piping, ductwork).
Electrical components (wiring, conduits, transformers).
Fasteners and hardware (bolts, screws, valves, fittings).
Proficiency with automated purchasing systems and industry-standard software, such as Bluebeam.
Strong knowledge of procurement policies, procedures, best practices, and relevant contract laws and regulations.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Physical Requirements:
This office position requires the ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer. Candidates must have the ability to perform repetitive tasks such as typing and using a mouse. Occasional standing, walking, bending, and reaching are necessary. The role also requires good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for handling office equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, is essential.
