Job Summary:

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers, and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 800 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

This paid internship* is located with the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) Business Unit. BC/DR provides contingency planning and operations support, as well as improvements and enhancements to technical infrastructure, systems, information security, emergency communications, and business continuity capabilities of the US House of Representatives. This internship reports to the Contingency Operations Team Lead and provides support to subject matter experts throughout the BC/DR Business Unit.

BC/DR is looking for an energetic and results-driven candidate to support a variety of initiatives across the BC/DR Business Unit. This opportunity is ideal for an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or Information Systems who is eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong initiative, accountability, and have solid problem-solving mindset.

The Summer Intern will provide a structured educational opportunity through direct exposure to the technical and operational functions of BC/DR. The Intern will support projects related to systems integration, process improvement, and technical documentation. Responsibilities may include assisting with system assessments, supporting technical initiatives, analyzing operational data, participating in cross-functional meetings, and contributing to reports and briefings.

The Intern will have the opportunity to gain real-life experience aligned with their degree, certification goals, or professional development interests. Through mentorship, hands-on project work, and collaboration with engineering and information systems professionals, the Intern will develop practical skills in systems analysis, technical problem-solving, and operational support. This position is designed to provide meaningful work experience while cultivating the next generation of technical professionals who are adaptable, solution-oriented, and committed to excellence.

The position does not have day-to-day supervisory/managerial responsibilities. This position may have access to Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

The incumbent will be eligible for course credit with this position, depending on their university requirements.

** The CAO standard business hours are 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week internship that will require onsite attendance in Washington, D.C.


Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative or operational support on various projects and activities.
  • Provides and projects a positive customer-focused, professional image in all interactions.
  • Performs other official duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Supports data normalization and support project integration for IT tools and resources.
  • Provides engineering support by assisting with design analysis, testing and documentation of electrical systems and components.
  • Supports the development and update of internal policies and procedures across BC/DR programs.
  • Performs other official duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • High school diploma.
  • Associate degree or certification from an accredited business or technical school, or enrolled student in a community college, junior college, university or graduate school program.
  • This is a full-time, in-person position, 40 hours a week, M-F.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated with an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of basic networking, circuit analysis, system analysis, and electrical power systems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Visio and Teams.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work efforts with minimum supervision.
  • Must be willing to occasionally travel, potentially with limited notice, and perform contingency operations. This would include the ability to lift (up to 50 pounds) and load equipment.

Preferred:

  • Prior work or volunteer experience in related fields.
  • Familiarity with technical program or project management.
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in learning about new technology.
  • Knowledge of the Legislative Process and the Legislative Environment.
