GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Hostler Driver plays a critical role in supporting air cargo operations by safely operating hostlers, yard tractors, and Class A commercial vehicles. This position is responsible for moving cargo equipment within airport-restricted areas and transporting loaded and empty trailers between airport facilities and off-site locations.
This role requires strict adherence to DOT regulations, TSA and airport security requirements, and company safety standards, while supporting efficient, on-time cargo operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Equipment & Airport Operations
- Operate hostlers, yard tractors, day cabs, and other ground support equipment (GSE) to move trailers, ULDs, dollies, and cargo equipment within airport ramps and warehouse environments
- Spot, stage, and position trailers accurately to support cargo build-up, breakdown, and flight schedules
- Maintain situational awareness of aircraft, vehicles, personnel, and ramp hazards at all times
- Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and en-route inspections in accordance with DOT and company standards
- Identify and report mechanical defects, safety concerns, or operational issues immediately
DOT & Roadway Transportation
- Operate Class A commercial vehicles on public roadways to transport cargo between the airport and off-site locations
- Maintain full compliance with DOT regulations, including hours of service (HOS), driver logs, inspections, and drug and alcohol requirements
- Ensure all cargo is properly secured for safe transport
- Complete all required documentation, including trip reports, inspection records, and logs, accurately and in a timely manner
Safety, Security & Compliance
- Comply with all TSA regulations, airport authority rules, and customer security requirements
- Maintain airport badge and adhere to all restricted area access procedures
- Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and required certifications
- Report all accidents, incidents, injuries, spills, or security concerns in accordance with company policy
Air Cargo Handling & General Support
- Assist with cargo handling duties as needed, including loading/unloading, pallet build-up and breakdown, and warehouse support
- Support operational needs across shifts and departments as required
- Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Valid CDL Class A license with acceptable driving record
- Ability to meet and maintain DOT driver qualification standards, including current medical certification
- Ability to pass DOT drug and alcohol testing, 10-year federal background check, and airport security screening
- Ability to obtain and maintain an airport badge and restricted area access
- Must be at least 21 years of age (DOT requirement)
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
Preferred:
- Previous experience operating tractor-trailers, hostlers, or yard equipment
- Experience in air cargo, airport ground handling, logistics, or freight operations
- Familiarity with airport ramp environments and cargo ground support equipment
- Experience working in time-sensitive, safety-driven operations
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- A combination of outdoor ramp, warehouse, and roadway driving environments
- Frequent exposure to varying weather conditions, aircraft noise, and high-traffic operational areas
- Safety-sensitive position requiring strict adherence to all safety protocols
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and maneuver cargo and equipment within company guidelines
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating vehicles and equipment
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and climbing
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
